EVE Online - Major lagging issues Please Help

I started playing eve online recently, and everything goes smoothly up to the point where I get involved in massive battles (200+ ppl). When these battles occur I experience extreme lag. I'm not exactly sure what causes this.

I called up my ISP (telkominternet) and they explained that it might be due to the fact that I'm on a shaped account.
So I asked how much a unshaped account would be and they informed me it would be R490, I'm already paying for a 4Mbit connection with the 3Gb package, roughly speaking would that mean that I would have to pay R900 per month (line rental + unshaped) ?

Okay, finally the questions :
1. Is the latency due to my shaped account.
2. Is there a way around the lag (different game settings, router settings, etc )
3. Did I calculate the above sum for unshaped correctly?

EVE online is one of those games you would need an unshaped account to play, or you play the game at early hours of the morning when everyone is off! :)

Welcome to South Africa!

If you don't, and you try, most servers will boot you off because your PING is too high.

You could play on local servers but sadly, EVE is a one of those games where we can't host a local server.

1) No its not from your account being shaped. You can play EVE on a dial up line. Ping makes very little difference in this game. I have the same 4 meg line with telkom account 3Gb account which is shaped and have very little lag. Do NOT get unshaped for this.

2) Lag can happen in large fleet fights due to numbers of ships and details being sent and received regarding each ships movements and actions. First thing in fleet fight is to have brackets off, I would suggest researching proper fleet setups for overviews as this does make a difference in performance. Some people also turn off turret effects as this saves your PC from having to render every single gun turret on every ship.

Also check out the Eve online forums for perfomance issue tips.

3) Check what I said in answer number 1 and then you dont have to worry if you calculated the shaped deal price correct or not ;)

For the record I have been in fleet fights as well with hundreds of ships, and they used to lag a lot until I had things set up better. I now run in full settings though as the EVE server is able to handle large ship numbers a lot better with their Stackless IO technology ( Sounds quite technical - i have no idea what it is, I just know they changed it, lol)

Finally, what system specs do you have? It may be a bottleneck on your PC side.

Hope this helps.

PS: Gdiza, There is only one server for EVE. No one else can host servers anywhere in the world. ;)

Thats right, the latency is usually a problem on the particular system the fleet is moving around in. The node will have considerably high load in a large battle.

Oh and there are 3 servers for Eve-online ;) you could host your own, but its still a bit buggy and the required resources are a bit too high for a hobbyist to take on.

Thanks Gory and Cadavre, I'm busy setting up a lag reducing overview and general settings.
If that doesn't work i'll try and check if it might be due to something at my PC's side

Ps. I'm playing over a wi-fi router, i've got a 802.11n (umm the newest one can't remember if it's b/g/n - to lazy to check now) router and usb...this wouldn't make a difference right?
