Johannesburg - Former Springbok captain Bob Skinstad has apologised for using a derogatory term while commentating on a Super Rugby game, according to a report on Monday.

The Star reported that he used the word "coconut" during a game between the Sharks and New Zealand's Chiefs on Saturday.

The word was used after Chiefs wing Lelia Masaga clashed heads with Sharks speedster Lwazi Mvovo, while attempting to go for a high ball. Both players were injured and left the field.

"Lelia Masaga has gone head high in an absolute coconut tackle straight onto Lwazi Mvovo and tried to take his head off," he said at the time. Later Skinstad said he had misunderstood the meaning. Chief's loose forward Scott Waldrom had tweeted: "Does the SA commentator know that the term 'coconut tackle' is actually a derogatory term?"

Skinstad replied: "Heard the term and thought it meant aiming for the 'nut' - no harm meant sorry."

Twitter user@Broncos_NRL tweeted "coconut is a racist term to describe a pacific islander, it's like calling a black man the N word".

This is funny.

And so is the expression on Bob's face.

EDIT: Why don't all these sufferers of derogatory words come up with derogatory words of their own to call the white man. Then they can balance out these situations.

Blown out of proportion.

A supposedly racist term created in your country by your fellow countrymen? No?

Agreed Hemps. Totally blown out of proportion. I heard him say it when it happened and I just thought he meant that the tackle was nuts. Especially because Skinstad was at the time saying that the tackle was insane and probably grounds for a red card as opposed to the white card that was given.

He shouldn't have even bothered to apologise. Bunch of overly sensitive fscktards in this country that freak out whenever anyone uses the word coconut these days regardless of context.

guy1: "hey guys I was walking along the beach the other day and a coconut fell off a tree and whacked me on the head. Weird huh?"
guy2: "OMG you are such a racist!"

WTF

Oh FFS... when will the over PC BS come to an end? I've heard someone's head referred to as a coconut, a pip, a melon, loaf and even a noodle .... all are references to some kind of food. WTF did only one of them become a derogatory term ??

I thought coconut is used to describe black people that are westernised and "white inside" by other black people? Sjoe...seems it has a whole lot of meanings. Will be careful when using it in future :-).

He missunderstood the term, he said he missunderstood the term and even said sorry for that.

Case freakin closed ffs.

To be honest, I cant stand his commentary, but its going a bit overboard by saying he's a racist.

Well, no surprises there with him misunderstanding the term; he's not exactly the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree, is he.

Read above.. he was actually using the correct term.

Seems he's not as stupid as you think.
