Selecting multiple cells by holding "ctrl" button down does not work . It's SOOO frustrating. Do I really have to reinstall Excel? Or is there a setting? I've run Office Diagnostics as well - no faults

Everything else does work, no problems whatsoever.

Eg. Let's say there's 12 cells in different rows and columns I would like to have a blue background.

Select first cell - done
press ctrl - done
select remaining 11 cells - CAN'T

choose blue backround color, format - POINTLESS

Found this here: Good luck

"Iv'e found an answer to this as I was having this trouble on a user's PC that I was supporting at work. Below is the fix.

Click on the Circle (top left "Ribbon")
Click Excel Options bottom of the window
Click Advanced
And scroll to the bottom.
Uncheck under Lotus Compatibility -> Transition navigation keys
I checked it and it wouldn't let me use CTRL + SHIFT + Down or Up arrows. Then unchecked it and it works fine now."

Thx, I'll give it a try just now :)

Might be a moot point, but are you certain that the Ctrl key is working? ie: if you press ctrl+p in Word, for example, does it bring up the Print dialog window?

Ah, thx dude. The other Ctrl key works fine (right). The left Ctrl key seems to have other functions assigned to it eg. ctrl + p = *, ctrl + u = backspace and not underline etc. Problem sorted: I'll just use the other key, thx.

Is this a laptop? Sounds more like your Keyboard configuration is set incorrectly. Control Panel > Regional Options > Keyboard setting should be around there if you look.

Check the Number 4 Key. If it has a Pound change it to UK Layout. If it has a dollar. Change it to US layout.

:)

Have you tried....

Select top left cell you want to highlight from, even if it's z4567.
Hold shift and use your arrow keys to expand the highlighted range...

No worries :)

Since it is a laptop and all: maybe check that the num lock is off. Then try using the Ctrl key again...

As for what the others have said, it could be a keyboard layout issue. What teraside was saying about the keyboard layout: In Word/Notepad/Excel/whatever, press and hold the shift key and then press the number 4 key on your keyboard (if your keyboard has a number pad on the right hand side of it, then DONT use that numerical 4 key, use the one in the row above the letter keys). Then you'll need to ensure that the keyboard layout is set accordingly (as per teraside's post).
