Police spokesperson Superintendent Henry Budhram said the other man was in a stable condition in hospital.
The three men were injured when they shot at the police after an ATM was blasted at the Zimbela shopping complex.
Police were waiting at the complex after receiving information that an ATM would be blown up in the early hours of Wednesday.
At about 02:30 they saw three men at the ATM and moments later there was an explosion.
Police rushed to the scene, but the three opened fire on them.
The police returned fire and two of the men were seriously injured, while a third was slightly injured.
A fourth person, believed to be an accomplice, was also wounded in the exchange of fire after joining the shoot-out.
He fled but his presence on the scene was established after he contacted one of his accomplices on his mobile phone at the scene and confirmed his injuries.
There was no money removed from the ATM but it was extensively damaged by the commercial explosives used.
Police confiscated an R5 rifle, two handguns and several live and expended cartridges.
The men had used a car which was hijacked in the Pinetown area
