So i made the step and went ahead and bought a perfect little home that's in the process of being transferred onto my name now. Thought id get the DSL ball rolling as i know how long that can take. Was pretty excited as i can see Olivedale exchange across the road from where we are going to be living.

Telkom is quick and installed my line on Friday. I do a lookup on the number and its linked to Bromhof exchange more than 6km away :\ Dafuq. Phone them up, they say tough, thats where your streetbox goes. I find it pretty stupid - i mean the other one is right across the road! Surely the network should propagate in a type of star pattern from each - not a idiotic L shape streching who knows how long. And its pretty fixed i guess. Cant exactly uproute a streetbox and link it to a new exchange now can you. I just know my connection is gonna be crap :\ FFS.

Urgh would break me :\ There must be something that can be done! Gonna see if i cant get hold of my techie that does his rounds near my house and bribe the living daylights out of him to do -something-

Won't work... they may no longer do 'foreign feeds'.

Well how about a completely new feed then :\ Damn i wish i knew how they actually go about hooking up the line so i can think of a way to circumvent this

I had the same happen to me and because my sync dropped constantly, eventually the manager of the techies told them to pull the line from the closer exchange. just complain and escalate till they do

So my fears have rationalised - moved into my new place on Monday - low and behold that sucker cant even keep a sync going. Had to drop down to 1Mb for it to keep the line up - but geeez, soon as i saw downward attenuation is at 64, i knew this was gonna suck. Throughput is roughly 0.2kb/s - most websites timeout and game launchers just laugh and error. Phoned up Telkom and put in a word or so. Call one of my higher up contacts yesterday after hearing nothing and sure as that i start getting calls for my number so they can trace it. Later on during the day two techie trucks pull up to the streetbox and conduct their tests. They phone me and say the cable is completely buggered - they cant even sync from the box so a new cable needs to be done. Waiting on the outcome of that now - hopefully they dont just replace the link that ties into Bromhof again.

Don't just sit and hope, you need to be proactive or they will do exactly what you fear, and replace the cable into Bromhof.

True that. I have 2 numbers tho, one for the ops manager in Bromhof exchange, and one for a random techie that works the area. Been calling them non stop every hour or so to tell them exactly this - but they are simply not answering. Even my higher up contact now says he's 'busy' when he picks up his phone and never calls back. Sucks to be sitting at work while they are just down the road - put my wife up to the task of getting a cell number now as i need to speak with -someone-
