I was given Euros by someone a long time ago and since I'm going to the US soon I either wanna convert to USD or into ZAR to go on a travel wallet.

Since you're not allowed to keep foreign currency longer than 30 days I'm wondering how I'll go about getting this exchanged.

Will my bank just let me convert it, or am I going to be in a bit of a pickle here?

Anyone had a similar situation before?

Edit: ai... typo in title

Unfortunately this is already a problem as they should have exchanged it...

and as you said you got it a long time ago now a problem for you.

legally you have a problem. maybe hold it till you fly to europe >_<

all dealings now are pretty much "black market" dealings now.

Best hope is find someone with USD to swop for...

Wonder if it's easier to exchange in the US, I could just take it with me there

Take it with you and swap it in the USA. They don't have the same hassles we do. Just remember you have to declare anything in any currency that exceeds US$10 000 when you get to the USA. The declaration means they won't confiscate if it exceeds US$10 000 or ask awkward questions. No declaration and you may face problems if it's above US$10 000.

When the rules changed and I was going to Angola, I tried to change Rand into US$ after going via passport control in OR Tambo. Rennies wanted FICA documents. I only had to provide a passport and ticket before. No FICA so no change. I flew to Angola and one of the touts outside the Airport offered me a better rate in US$ for my Rand than I would have got at Rennies.

South Africa's currency exchange rules are just dof. The only way I can put it.

Go to Travelex in Greenmarket Square

Otherwise I have a Spanish friend in Kenilworth who will buy them from you as he goes back in January. Send me a PM if you want to go this way

Edit: I just exchanged a WhatsApp message with him. No problem at all, can pay you Rands via EFT or cash, whichever you prefer. He said he'd pay €1,00 = R16,50. But notes, no coins

Awesome, thanks.

Someone else DM'd me too wanting to take it off my hands. I should know by end of the week.

Appreciate the help, thank you.
