Exercize Bike

I bought myself a sit up bench and weights a few months back and i've been using them at least 4 days a week, every week.

Go for it! You sound like you have the willpower, so you'll get some good value out of it.

I bought one from Makro last weekend (Motion Exercise Bike). It's more expensive, but it has magnetic resistance, which makes it really quiet (so you don't have to put the TV too loud) and the computer has some useful functions (the accuracy of which I can't really be certain of). That one you mention says "belt resistance" - while I haven't seen it, I know from previous experience that the belts can wear through (but I really have no clue what they're made out of these days).

Between kids and work, the only time I have to do exercise is after 19:00 in the evenings (week days). Not really the time to go out for a jog or a cycle. I have a home gym too and I've really got some good use out of it over the years. But felt I needed to do more cardio-vascular and the wife actually uses the bike every day too (and getting her to use the weights has been a titanic struggle over the years). :D

Good luck and stay focused! :D

Home exercise equipment is a waste of time and the only people benefiting from it, are the ones selling it.

You have first-hand experience?

I had a stairmaster and an exercise bike. You use it religiously for a month, or 6 months, or a year and eventually it gathers dust.

I go to the gym 4/5 times a week. Used a personal trainer for a while and am now on my own regime. 100% more effective.

I have to agree with Blunomore 1000% on this. It will eventually be a white elephant. However if you do have the will power. Big ups to you and respect.

Haha.

Same happened to me. Only I didn't have a stair master, but a bench pressing set.

Gathers dust. Eventually.

Going to a gym, is by far more effective.

Nowdays, I exercise at home. Push ups, sit ups, various others. Run around the plot about 9 times (perimeter is about 530m).

Home gym equipment is truly a white elephant. Especially those ab-shock ones...

:D

Yes, I agree - that's the scenario that happens with most people, but if there is no other option (and you really want to) - it is definitely possible to stick to it.

If going to the gym is 100% more effective, does that mean that home gyming is half as good? :D

I disagree with it becoming a white elephant. First of all don't buy the one that has belt-resistance. Secondly, place it in a strategic position to make it as easy as possible to just climb on and ride for a couple of minutes. No use having it in your bedroom if you only go there to lie down or to sleep.

I tried the gym thing and it didn't work for me. When I started gyming at home it was a different story. Simply because I have more time and its my space. I also record my favourite programs on PVR and watch them while gyming. It makes gym fun and that's why I prefer it at home. :)

I don't agree at all, i bought an orbitrek and i use it twice a day sometimes 7 days a week.

If you cannot use home equipment the chances are your 350 rand a month at virgin will also be wasted.

I would rather my 1.8k orbitrek gather dust then my 3.6k a year gym contract going to waste.

Either way you need to make the time to use the equipment either @ home / @ the gym. I'll go for the cardio stuff ito home machines but for weight sets the gym membership is way cheaper that buying 300-400kgs of plates for presses etc.

Personally I like the gym environment, and considering that the membership allows me access to much more equipment than I'll be able to buy in 10years and never mind the storage.

Bottom line is that any exercise is better than nothing :)
