Expanding Fibre connection to local network

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to assist me.

We just got fibre from NeoTel here at the office and it seems that they only allow us to connect to the internet with 5 static IP addresses.

The NeoTel router does not have DHCP enabled, so in an office with about +-30 devices will we have to timeshare our internet

All jokes aside, is it possible to setup a standard ADSL router to connect to the NeoTel router's available port and then have that ADSL router be our local network's DHCP server?

According to NeoTel's tech support they cannot assist as their support stops at their router and they will not be able to tell me if i am able to setup another router to be the DHCP server to our network.

Any advice will be appreciated.

That is shocking of neotel. An adsl router will not work. You will need a wan enabled router, I.e has a wan port. You then setup on of the static IP's from the range assigned by neotel, and then setup your local ip range to Nat behind it.

Get an old machine with 2 NICs and install PFsense.

Sounds about right. They provide internet to that point. It's your responsibility to take it from there. But don't stress!

So just so it makes sense to me, i will basically need to set this router up with one of the 5 IP addresses, as if it was a normal pc, then the router will handle our DHCP and firewall and network monitoring?

Exactly that.

The router receives internet from Neotel, using one of your 5 IPs. The router will then hand out IP addresses and be the default gateway for the local LAN, routing all internet requests out over the Neotel interface.

We did the same with our Neotel WIMAX link,they gave us a single LAN breakout which we configured in our WAN router,the other 4 private IPs we used to expose web services like OWA/Exchange
