Expect power cuts 3x a week

It makes sense to a certain degree. It gives the techs time to repair/maintain/salvage the power plants.

As long as the actually use that time then I have no issues with it.

I just hope they stick to their schedule.

WHAT ??

Eishkom has Tecnical Staff ??

Since when ?

If they DID have Technical Staff, proper maintenance would be done. Right ?

No power cuts, no Load shedding ...................... etc..

Unfortunately it doesn't quite work that way. To do proper maintenance the plant is normally down for 6 weeks to three months. Also the additional costs to restart a cold plant is quite significant so it's not cost-effective to shut a plant down for a short term to do partial maintenance.

No - I get the feeling this is a conditioning process to force users to adapt to other sources of energy and implement measures to reduce dependency on electricity because of the anticipated long time frame to solve the problem. And given the government's track record on large projects and their inability to manage the large government owned structures (Telkom, Postal Services, Transnet, SAA etc) into effective and cost-efficient service providers does not provide me with confidence that this problem will ever be solved. (at least not to the levels pre-2000)

What upsets me the most is the arrogance of Eskom and government to force the public into this situation after they failed to plan for the future. Although they knew that a serious problem was developing they did not implement a educational program to use electricity more efficiently and allow the public to switch over to other energy sources over an extended period. .

I was watching a documentary about North Korea on National Geographic and i found that they also have load shedding or power cuts.

South Africa's infrastructure seems to be slowly degrading. I dont want to live in this country anymore. Its quite sad.

yeah but NKs load shedding would be due to not being able to obtain parts to maintain or build new power stations because of sanctions, not incompetence..

stop complaining and spread awareness to your friends and family - moaning does not solve the problem

Discussing it on a forum with thousands of visitors is spreading awareness is it not?

Since the rest of the country is having cuts of 2.5 hours and Johannesburg is having cuts of 4 hours, does that mean effectively everyone in Jo'burg will be having 12 hours of load shedding a week while the rest of the country only has 7.5 hours, 'cause that would be ridiculously unfair?

(Particularly considering that according to the City Power schedule, a very large population living in the residential suburbs in Randburg and Sandton will be shed three times a week from 18h00 until 22h00!)

EDIT: City Power is only shedding Jo'burg residents once or twice a week, alternating every week between block's xA and xB, so technically we're only going to have 4 or 8 hours of shedding a week in each area. w00t)

No it's not unfair because most of that population is wealthy and previously advantaged so they deserve to be load shed.

No excuse for load shedding if their is enough power. Do these people not understand that its not healthy turning electrical equipment on and off.... No excuse for it

Good thing I bought my UPS in time and set it up yesterday, as long as it's not more than 3 hours a day I'll cope but yeah **** Tel... I mean Eskom but **** Telkom anyway.

this is BS, when will this country realise that we are going down fast!!

I hope they don't have plans to extend the durations to 4 hours, my UPS, only feeds my router and modem, for 2 hours max.

hey, it's just for three months until they can pass legislation to screw the end-user further.

they will use the time to build up coal stock piles cos they screwed up in that department too.

they will also use the time for maintenance as they have neglected the power plants through incompetence.

B-Ark: Ship of Fools

Just heard on the news that they are notgoing to go ahead with the planned power cuts - If this is true, and seeing as it is not April 1 - then they are total fools that cannot not, could not or could ever find their way out of a wet paper bag - A four page ad in the paper must have cost a fortune, people and business have planned around this, and then this

Has anyone else heard this? Has anyone who was to be cut-off been cut-off?
