i've just been upgrade to a 4MB line (yay!) and can confirm this by checking the router config where i see downstream of 4096k upstream of 512k.

i went to speedtest.net and ran a couple tests and the best i get is about 1576kb/s and upload of 413kb/s with ping of 37ms.

is this good/bad/normal?

do you pay for a 512 line or 4 meg line? Because if thats the case, Im downgrading to a 512 line, pay less, and then get a free upgrade to 4meg. Please explain how this works - because im going to be very irate if I pay more than what I should!!

no, i'm paying for the 4MB line :D but i'm trying to work out if its worth it or not. coz the current speeds are obviously well short of what i had been hoping for :-(

My stats on my 4mb:
First

Second

Ive reached 420kb/s download speed before, direct off the Do Broadband servers..
Upload has reached about 62kb/s...

I dont think this test is 100% accurate

somethign is very wrong then. this is the best i am getting :

why would i be so far behind on the dl speed??

You guys are scaring me! I'm getting my 4mb line end of the month. Doesn't seem worth it. Hope it is!

All depends on the quality of your line, how far away you are from the exchange and other factors. I only sync at 2.5mb and its ment to be 4 :/

How about speeds on a 384kbs connection

I've had 384 Telkom broadband for just over a month and get the following on speedtest.net: down = 320kbps max / up 100kbps max.

Does that sound about right?

Cheers

Donny

Yes m8. You actually get a bit more than me

how do i check noise and attenuation on a billion router? what figures should i be expecting to see, in order to know if i'm way off or not on that front.

i phoned telskum and they said it appear ok on their side. the dude then "rebuilt" the line and when i tested immediately afterwards, was getting speeds of around 3,400kbs so i thought cool, sorted. but when i tested a few minutes later, it had dropped back down to the 1500kbps range :( what gives??

On my Billion, there is an ADSL link at the bottom of the main page.

Mine shows the following

Code:
Operational Mode ADSL G.Dmt
Upstream 512 kbps
Downstream 4096 kbps
Noise Margin (Upstream) 12.0 db
Noise Margin (Downstream) 16.5 db
Attenuation (Upstream) 22.5 db
Attenuation (Downstream) 36.5 db

My guess is you are too far away from the exchange

ADSL
Parameters

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin 13.0 dB 14 dB
Line Attenuation 49.5 dB 28.0 dB
CRC Errors 20096 2
Latency Fast Fast

what are those downstream "CRC" errors? why do i seem to have such a high figure here ?

Fastest Download: 3678 kb/s
Fastest Upload: 539 kb/s

I consistently get these speeds.

Downloads and browsing regularly run at > 400kB/s.

Difference may be that I am < 1km from the exchange (I can see it from where I live).

I'm paying R740P/m. How much is your 4Mg line?
