Expensive SSD

Did you by any chance open the macbook and disconnect the battery before this error occurred? I had a similar problem where I could not boot past a certain point when I installed a new drive in my macbook - it had something to do with when i disconnected the battery - it reset the laptops clock back to 1970 or something. I had to use a recovery disk, go into terminal and set the date back to normal before i could install anything.

I may have an air SSD from a 2011 in one of my Mac Pro's.

Will check tomorrow for you.
I usually re-use them when I upgrade them, as I use the proprietary -> sata adaptors.. (apple used to use a mildly modified m-sata prior to them going pci-e)

If not, can order one for you (will be a darn sight cheaper than core).
Your model number is an A1369 / A1370 ?

Another thing you should check - the Air has a recall on the Toshiba SSD's
If its faulty, they should replace for free under the replacement warranty. Check Apple's site for details.

https://www.apple.com/support/macbookair-flashdrive/

I was hit by that no less than 3 times before they gave me a newer machine..

If yours is a 2012-2013 model, its probably the issue, and you can tell Core to go f. themselves, and replace it for free under Apples recall.

Thanks for the info. If I remember correctly, my Macbook was not one of the faulty ones. However, I did message Core anyway asking them to confirm this. I doubt they will acknowledge if it is a free replacement but heres hoping.

Here, send this back to them:

Lol

I won't be surprised if Core actually quoted you on replacing the entire motherboard with RAM and SSD because of not actually knowing what's wrong, so they'll just replace parts until it works.

If we had the official Apple store and genius bar in SA I'm sure they'd swap out your device for a new one. But since we have no choice but to deal with core, fat chance that would happen.

I got the laptop back today from the iStore. I asked the manager why they are charging me R12000 for a 128GB SSD and he said that Core replace the SSD and logic board as standard. I asked him if they can just replace the SSD alone and he said that he's not allowed to contact them: I must do it. I also removed the drive and it now boots perfectly fine to an external which confirms that the SSD is indeed shagged and it actually prevents the machine from doing anything if it remains installed.

I mailed them for a price of the SSD. I've already found one on eBay. If Core quotes me a price that's not stupid expensive like before, i'll go pick it up and install it myself. Otherwise i'll just buy the drive off eBay.

I'm also looking at the option of sending it to Apple in the US to get it fixed since se have people at work that visit the US regularly. One guy bought an iPod here, went to the US for a few days and the iPod had a problem with the volume selection. He took it to the Apple store in Tampa and they just gave him a new one, no questions asked.

Thanks for the heads up. The smallest drive they have for my MacBook Air is the 480GB model for $349. Not a bad price since a 128GB drive from eBay is around $200.

Still seems expensive. But then again so is buying a new Mac. I see that they come with 5 year warranty.

+- R5500 for 480GB is steep, will have to wait for prices to come down, running out of space on my 128GB

I sent the laptop with a friend to the Apple store in Tampa, Florida. He was quoted $280 excl taxes for the SSD replacement including the replacement of the Airport/Bluetooth module and it's wiring. The Airport/Bluetooth module and wiring was damaged (spudger slipped) when I removed it during initial troubleshooting.

Works out to just under R4400 including taxes which is a fraction less than the R12300 Core quoted me which was only for the SSD.

Well the guy has to fly to the US to get it fixed, so the price included airfare .
