Hi guys,

what is your experience with compatible/generic Samsung toner cartridges?
I'm looking at offers e.g. from Inksaver or cartridgehyper on a MLT-D101S (black)...
Would you guys recommend generic toners over a originals?

Thanks
hilrap

The MLT-D101S uses a chip which is region locked if I remember correctly. I think that the SA/Africa/Middle East version of this cartridge is the MLT-D101S/XSG. This makes it expensive to produce chips for each different region. You can apparently destroy your printer if the firmware detects that you are using an incompatible cartridge. Many of the compatible cartridges also require you to change the firmware in the printer. Here are some reviews of compatible cartridges from Amazon ...

I have an SCX 4300 MFP. I tried a replacement/refilled cartridge, but my printer reports it is empty. Several years ago, I found an update for the printer firmware itself that was supposed to tell it to ignore the fact that the eeprom was not there, but I'm not 100% sure how effective it has been.

It depends on the type of generic.

Does it have:
no warranty
3 months
12 months...

That gives you an indication as to the confidence the manufacturer has in their own product.
