Expert calls for data privacy laws

Kwant says to prevent, for example, data in testing labs being abused,

Having dealt with both SA labs and European labs, I would tend to lean towards the SA labs when it comes to trust. I know Telkom is a dirty word here, but I have dealt with their labs and the SABS labs and been pleasantly surprised by both.

the European Data Protection Act states that customer data may not be transferred to non-EU countries unless that country has regulations which can provide similar levels of privacy protection to the UK.
I think she meant to say Europe instead of UK ...

The UK, to the best of my knowledge, has no privacy laws ... I would guess that celebrities like David Beckham and family know that best.

The UK DOES have a Data Protection Act, which IMO Salome Kwant seems decidedly unfamiliar with.

Data protection is becoming increasingly crucial for local companies, she states,
HOW?? is the question, I feel I should ask.

I feel I should add that I believe the UK Data Protection Act is a good Act and that SA should implement similar data protection laws, but I would rather they didn't listen to "experts" like Salome Kwant.

Well, this article certainly raises awareness, though I don't see what else is it valuable for. Last month we saw the draft data protection bill and the discussion paper of the SALRC, where these issues are addressed.

Don't know who wrote that article but the following sentence is a bit senseless... or maybe Kwant doesn't fully know what s/he is talking about

There is no such thing as European Data Protection Act. What kind of an expert would say that?

By the way Ian, true, the UK does have a data protection act in line with the EU Data Protection Directive (see the Information Commissioner's website http://www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk/)
but unlike South Africa, their Bill of Rights does not contain a right to privacy.

You're not a lawyer, are you fairlady?

I am, and it pains me to read that "expert's" statement. :)I know what s/he is trying to say, but there are better ways of saying it.

Re: what you said, I just supported your opinion.
