During December, I shut my pc OFF while away on holiday.
At the end of the first week, I received my bandwidth usage via email - 0Mb - no surprise here.
At the end of the second week, still with the pc off, my bandwidth usage for week 2 showed 17Mb usage.
Do i have a ghost in my house, or is my phone line eating my bandwidth?

Hi

It sounds to me like you have a router. Some routers still send info out even though your PC is off. Some people also complain they dont surf and then get usage on there line, This happens sometimes because of spyware or a virus or some software running in the background that accesses the net. The best way to avoid this is to make sure you have an updated antivirus and when away from your PC, switch off your router.

Thanx
Jason

Hi Mohammedm and Kreno

I had exactly the same experience, but in my case the modem and all machines were switched off. It was later determined that my account has been abused from 4 different numbers. The case was investigated, but I did not get complete feedback yet. This was about four months ago. I am still trying to get feedback from Telkom, and hope it will happen within a week or so. There is an obvious weakness in the Telkom system since one can not alter your own password. Your username and password is always known to at least one other untrusted party, which is a completely insecure protocol. After I received the security feedback I will let inform you about the details.

No router. Just a USB modem which was OFF as the only power it receives is from the PC and my PC was switched off.

PS: I have an Alcatel SpeedTouch 330 USB modem which I bought in the UK for 80 pounds. Telkom was asking R2500 for the same modem when I had ADSL installed...

Hi rpm

I don't think being able to change your password would help us :-

I had a problem with my primary email account (the telkomdslXXXXX login), they asked me over the phone for my username and password. When I told them (had no choice), they verified it [:0] !! i.e. they can see your user/pass.

Turned out to be a typo,,,,,,,,,,,[V]
