Explaining homosexuality to your kids

Teach them to be open minded. To explore other views and if that happens to be different from yours, accept it.

Absolutely - applies to religion, sexual choice ..... and even those people who are Apple fanboois. :)

I'm quite young and very far away from having kids, but I don't get what you would have to explain.

My parents never explained anything to me, not to say this is the way to go, but just that I don't think it should even be something that needs "understanding" in this day and age.

Same with me.

I'm very open minded though...I'm not afraid to read up or explore different things whereas some people might be afraid of the "unknown" and would rather not delve into it, which is a very sad reality. It makes people dumb. Many of those lurk in the PD section.

My parents never explained to me about homosexuality. I heard the word gay on TV when I was in mmm I think it was Std 3 and asked my mom what it meant. She matter of factly told me it is when men are attracted to other men. I just said OK and went back to wait for Biker Mice from Mars to start.

The technicalities of it just came naturally to me when I was older. No explaining required :)

Biker Mice from Mars made you gay?!?!

Explaining it to your kids is the easiest thing in the world. Tell them if someone loves someone else they should be able to do so.

OP original question makes it sounds like if your kid love his/her pet, you have to explain bestiality to him/her.

I first encountered it when I was forced to read Swallows and Amazons, by Arthur Ransome. The main charchter being Titty Walker - genuinely. The passage goes on to explain how two boys were in a boat, and they were ''gay together''.

That was my sex ed done .......

I don't see why you would need to specifically tell your kids that it's OK for men to be with men and women to be with women. They'll pick it up,if you treat people with respect.

Anyway, don't parents usually just wait for the kid to come out the closet when they're ready?

I remember asking my dad when I was a wee lad what being gay was. He replied that it is something that happensa lot in the western world because their women are so ugly!

My parents had gay friends when I was little. And there's this gay joke about 8 Mei (ag my). Obviously, I didn't exactly know that these friends were gay. And I started telling the joke to this uncle. And my mom tried to get me to stop but I was gonna tell that joke, no matter what. And I finished it. I can't remember how the guy reacted to it, but I remember that's how I found out he was gay.

I grew up in a very close minded family. I didn't even know what sex was until I was about 12 - I found out on my own:o
Anyway, I vowed to bring my kids up differently, and being married to a man who came from a very open minded family, helped a lot.
We never hid anything from our kids. They asked questions, we answered, no beating about the bush - they got graphic explanations - it's amazing what they knew at such young ages. When they were small, we were best friends with a gay couple and the kids didn't see any difference in them as people.
Obviously, the way they have been brought up has made it so much easier for them to accept that their father is gay - they don't look at him any differently, he is still the same person he always has been, except for the fact that he discusses men with our teenage son, instead of women!!!
I think the TRUE test of their acceptance will come when he meets someone and introduces them to him.

You were little ... I wont hold it against you. Not because it is a gay joke ...... but because it is fcking lame.

:p

Just explain romantic love as a love between two people, instead of just between a man and a woman
