Extending parental leave in SA?

I don't see why businesses should have to sponsor or underwrite people's lifestyle choices. If you choose to have a baby then you need to take responsibility for that and take unpaid leave if you want to spend time with your new child. It's absolutely ridiculous to expect businesses to pay for you to take time off work. This applies both to women and men. It's not the businesses problem if you choose to reproduce.

It would be nice as I said in the other post but not practical in this country.
Anyway, my Son will be born in November and I will have a month's leave in December so it works out well this time at least :)

I had 2 months leave in Germany, and could take 6+ months if I wanted too.
How it works is that the company pays 30% of your pay, and the government another 30%, so you only get 60% of your total pay.
My wife didn't work at this time, but if she had, then she could take one year, at least. Most woman stop working to be with their kids for the first 3 years.

SA do not have the tax payers to cover this kind of thing, so it would simply not be practical.

It's a pity it's not practical - it'd be great. I get a whole 3 days paternity leave and that comes out of my 3 days family responsibility leave as well. So I can spend 3 days bonding but then if anything happens to anyone...

It's great for the country though. It seems that in general, more intelligent and using education as a surrogate for that people, tend to marry less and also have fewer children. For example more intelligent and educated women tend to marry more intelligent (then them) men and as a result end up having fewer children. As IQ is to some extent heritable we have more intelligent people reproducing less well than the others. Now measures such as this, if they help the more educated reproduce more will be good for the country or society as a whole. Maybe not ideal for the business or the economy, but in the long term they could offer overall benefit.

Extending parental leave in SA?

A labour relations expert says that any attempts to increase the current parental leave status in South Africa is not likely to be welcomed by business.

I am not for this. Having a look at the the SA economic landscape and then wanting to add some more leave days... no. Also this is in a extremely small way another incentive to have a child even when one can not afford it.

3 days paternity leave is too little. 5 days seems reasonable.
