External Hard Drive for Plex

I am running plex server on an old laptop and need to get a new external hard drive to store the media. I am looking at 8TB drives, found the below two.

Don't buy a SMR disk!

No thanks rather buy an internal drive and put it in an external casing. Had too many external drives fail over the years.

Wrt external drive.. u running media direct off it?

I’ve done this like a decade or more ago on an old mecer p3 notebook and worked ok.. but I’d not recommend as a longer term solution.

Anyway I suggest the casing with internal drive.. those external case drives are problematic at times as the usb controllers can pop and external drive soln don’t have ide controllers often as a cost cutting.

Yep. Was planning to store the media on the external drive and the laptop will store any downloaded media on the drive. I have an Android tv box in my lounge, so the plex app on the box will stream the media off the media server.

Don't buy a SMR disk!

SMR is fine for the right applications. Just don't buy SMR of you're planning to do heavy write operations constantly or using it in a raid setup.
