Ok I have 2 TB HP external still in warranty. It has started to make a "Crr" "Crr" sound every 1.5 seconds and is not picking up anymore on Windows 7. Is there anyway to access the drive and save the data or am I at a loss?

I've managed to access external hard drives using Linux where Windows was not able to.

Download something like Ubuntu or my favourite, Peppermint. Boot from a live CD and copy the data over.

If you need more info, please PM me.

TestDisk works well, as well (and I have said this before elsewhere), but you need to make sure you run it as administrator otherwise nothing will copy over to the destination drive.

If it it model dr2000i, then screws are covered by four rubber legs. Easy to open without losing warranty. Remove drive. unscrew USB bridge noard and connect to PC SATA controller. Don't boot Windows, use live CD as adviced. Report BIOS boot messages, is your drive recognised properly?

Yea its model DT2000i (Black and Shiny) Which is the best live CD to use. Where would i see the bios boot messages?

The drive does not read on my PC anymore but the LED light blinks. also does not read on my media player or TV

Thanks for the help guys

During startup screen. It can be obstructed by some OEM picture, configurable in BIOS to disable it or to enable diagnostic messages. But while you are in BIOS setup, you can click on device and check if it diaplayed with correct name and capacity (it has to match label on the hard drive). Only if this information is correct you can continue with life CD.
Re: The best live CD, not sure, even Hirens boot CD should work. We still don't know if drive can be recognised by normal utilities.

Correct. Exactly what I wrote in my first post. But you can try live CD first. If it can pickup the drive, so you can take out data, thats fine (which I doubt).
