Hi
I want to put a hard drive on the network, the cheapest NAS enclosure I can find is a Dlink for R1000 :erm:
Is there a cheaper way of doing this? I have a laptop and a Desktop PC I want to back up to it.
I fix computers so I forever have the desktop in pieces testing stuff so putting in the drive in there wont. I am scared I damage or get the laptop stolen and loose info like that. I want to backup daily.
With as little effort as possible.
Thanks

Why don't you just get an external enclosure with USB interface, that way you can plug into either laptop or desktop at will and do your backups like that.

Kayvee i dont want to plug things in and out, if I forget to plug it in it wont run, I am in and out the office 10 times a day, the laptop is always on and on the network thouht it would be the easiest.

Drake2007, yes that is the one Pinacle sells the here buy us

could also buy a wireless router with a usb port and kill 2 birds with one stone

ithere was a belkin for sale on myadsl for that price

I built a ClarkConnect Server with mirrored drives to back up client data before working on them.

Drives are cheap nowadays so adding storage is easy.

As for a machine for the server, if you don't have one, there is a place in Cape Town (you don't say your location) called "Bridgeport Technical Services" that sell refurbished machines a very good prices (+/- R1,5K for a P4)

The ClarkConnect Community software is free and is the same as their commercial offering with a few features removed. (I have never had need for the removed features so it is not really an issue for me)

Some router with a usb port can function as usb host for sharing removable hard drives

Build your own NAS server using old hardware - that old P3 box in the garage, and then install FreeNAS

Sorted! :D

Now it is starting to get interesting :)

greggpd, will chack that out, thanks

ITCynic, I have played with Clarkconnect once before. Can you explain a bit more how you had the server setup was regarding the backup..

Thanks

@Sl33py

I have various drives in the server :-
1 x 80Gb for the actual ClarkConnect OS
2 x 250Gb RAIDED drives (mirrored) for my personal storage and backups.
2 x 1Tb RAIDED drives (mirrored) for my clients backups

1Gb network card for decent throughput.

To backup I plug the client machine into the network and either use Acronis Backup (Commercial app) or Cobian Backup (Free app) to backup to the server.

If the client computer is not working I remove the drive and use a SATA/IDE to USB adapter to plug the drive into my machine and backup from there.

The SATA/IDE to USB is a Vantec product http://www.vantecusa.com/front/product/view_detail/266 and is probably the best "techy tool" I have ever purchased.

My second ClarkConnect Server is used as a Web server with PHP5 and MySQL which I use for application testing and website development.

My router supports file sharing if a USB hard drive of flash memory is connected to the USB port. YES!!!! Thank you to everybody that gave a input. I also picked up a lot of other information I can try in my workshop or at clients.

ITCynic thanks for your explanation, I must look at seting my workshop up with a server like that.

If there are more ideas put them down we all learn form it.
Thanks

Yeah I am also going the FreeNAS route as I have an old machine kicking around doing little else, I figured this to be the best to suite my backup/fileserver needs.
