so i am considering buying an external hdd

now do i just buy a plain std external one, saw a nice 500gig one for 1,3k, at landmarkpc

or do i buy an internal one and then the additional casing for it and save a few bucks
 
it will cost you about the same and 1.3k for 500gb external seems good unless its ex vat which i doubt
 
Well, if you want to use an E-SATA cable (a LOT faster than USB-2), that will require external power, so .. it depends on what you're using the drive for.
I prefer finding external power for the drive and having the data transfer done in 1/10th the time.
 
E-sata?? whats that, and how do i know if my mb can handle it

also, i would like an external one, that runs off usb opwer, but they seem to be way more expensive
 
I think it just means 'external' sata, it's basically the same connection as the internal hard drives now have, as a replacement for the clunkly and large ide format. My mobo has one on the outside, make sure yours does too before getting one. Stoke is right about the speed though, really worth it for the data transfer rate.

landmark's a good site. ordered my graphics card from them and it was delivered the next day... i'd recommend them..

Forgive my ignorance but isn't that how it's supposed to done anyways?

I can't remember the last time I bought something online and it wasn't delivered the next day.

What would really really impress me is if I ordered something today and it was delivered tomorrow (hint: tomorrow is a public holiday!) haha.

I'd recommend THOSE guys! haha.
 
where is landmarkpc based?

i thought i'd check on bidorbuy too see if there is any nice deals, but it still looks like landmarkpc is the best

i doubt if my mobo can run e-sata - i have a very, very cheapy board from matrix
 
I must say, eSATA rocks with the transfer rates, beats USB with a big stick. However, eSATA has been pretty poorly implemented by manufacturers and the drivers they write. USB based externals are a little easier to work with.

I bought a 250Gig hard drive, controller card and the casing, and together it was less than trying to buy something with eSATA on it.
 
Despite the fact that your current mobo might not support Esata, it might be worth it to get a HD that still supports it if you're planning on keeping it for a while.

you normally dont get things the next day when you place an order after 12, i ordered my card after 15:00 and it was there the next morning. first time that's ever happened to me.

they're based in CT i think..
 
well i order mine (the 500gb external for 1,3) from landmark on Tue night, and it was delivered on Wed afternoon, yay .... i was impressed

so this afternoon, it i be trying it out and formatting my pc in the process
