I'm looking to get myself a 1.5TB, perhaps 2TB, external HDD. What's the best offer going around at the moment?

you have to buy a drive and an external bay but I worked it out to around R700 for a 2TB

You can also buy from them as a mybb user (no need to fill in freaky forms and stuff).

Is there any real difference between a Toshiba & Verbatim drive? I'm looking at one of these two:

Not quite sure how they get their prices - 1 TB: R550; 750GB: R678; 2TB R2134. Anyway, the 1TB drive is a really good price.

Actually, at R550 a pop it's almost worth getting 2 x 1TB drives rather than 1 x 2TB.

In terms of Verbatim or Toshiba, they both use 3rd party HDDs. Verbatim don't make HDDs and Toshiba only make 2.5" in terms of consumer drives, so it's just the USB enclosure that is branded by either Verbatim or Toshiba. They will most likely contain a Samsung HDD inside. Other externals like iOmega often make use of Seagate drives.

Also make sure you are getting an external that is compatible with USB 3.0.
Even if your PC only has USB2.0, USB3.0 is backwards compatible and you will probably see higher speeds than with a USB2.0-only drive.

Keep away from Verbatim drives.
I as at one of the PC wholesalers and I was waiting at the returns counter. The clerk at one of the desks had a huge number of Verbatim external drives and he was busy doing data capturing. SO I started chatting to him. It turns out that they have a massive amount of comebacks on the Verbatim drives as oppose to other makes. IIRC they used Samsung drives in the Verbatim case.

Several of the online retailers appear to supply cheap 3.5" USB3 hard drive enclosures (you would need to confirm availability though) which could be used to house any cheap 3.5" internal drive ...
