I have an external drive showing up as RAW on Windows however on Mac osx it is being picked up and I can read and access files from it. How can I have it show up as proper drive on Windows. I need to try recover about 3 important folders that I moves to the root of the drive but now even on Mac those folders don't appear.

Use a linux live os like Mint and backup the data to an external drive. Then format the hard drive. It's likely NTFS that has had the page file or hibernation file corrupted. Windows will not read it then since if it writes to the ntfs drive while either of those files are corrupted it corrupts the whole file system.

Is there no way to fix the drive without backing up data. All the drives I have are smaller than this external. So I cannot be able to back up the entire drive since the space used is larger than the spare drive I have. The drive is usually being accused on a MacBook that is dual booting OS 10 and Windows 10. Also I have a program on the Mac side of the drive that allows me to read and write on this ntfs external drive. I suspect not removing the drive safely is the problem. In the process some files I had copied to the root of the external drive aren't showing up for some reason. Since I can read the drive in Mac OS is there perhaps a software I can run there to recover deleted or lost files or should I try recovery process on Windows first as I can't afford to format the drive just yet.

UPDATE: Fought with the drive and finally decided to get easus partition master and I clicked on check partition option and it was able to fix everything through chkdisk including the MFT and lo and behold all my files are back and hard drive is showing up once more on windows 7 as ntfs with all my files intact. Even the 3 folders I thought I had lost are exactly where I had placed them. A perfect end to the day.
