Good day

I would like some advice on setting up a 500m radius wireless network from an ADSL connection.

I have not purchased any equipment as yet, including the ADSL modem.

Thanks

I would also like to allow people within that radius to purchase access to the network.

Hmm. Make sure you get the relevant licences from ICASA before you start selling internet, and please, don't use amps to get more distance. This only serves to foul the frequency for everyone on it, especially if you plan on using an omni. Forgive the hatred that comes your way when people figure out you want to be a wisp, its just that too many have abused the free spectrum given by the government.

Bit surprised by the response by Kloon - Had a long chat on the phone to RPM and he suggested I post my question/s here and would get a lot of help from this Forum.... I thought companies would be clambering to offer their products.

erb: there is just so many people out there doing it, no offence, but I'd rather stick to the big boys that are known and trusted like WebAfrica etc.

But I also do agree with Kloon, if you're heading down the WISP line, do some research on it, find out all the legal aspects etc.

Don't ask here and expect to know everything after 20 + posts...

That requires what is know as an ECNS licence from ICASA. There are currently only around 10 that have been issue in the entire country.

ICASA has said they are considering opening bidding for a further half a dozen ECNS licences. But you are going to be competing against the likes of Internet Solutions and Verizon Business and you'll need a pretty solid business case to even reach the first round.

I have no intention of being in competition with anyone. I work in a school environment in an area outside of any existing and planned WISP area, and as such want to share a wireless connection on campus. The 'payment' part will be set up to restrict bandwidth usage in order to prevent abuse.

My intention in posting a query here would be to point me in the right direction in terms of my research.

If you are in an under serviced area then you can look into obtaining a USAL from ICASA.

If you are perhaps trying to provide a hotspot type solution to users of mobile devices like laptops and cellphones then you may be licence exempt if the network is exclusively available on your campus. However you will not be able to provide such a solution using only a single access point... no matter how many fancy antennas and (illegal) amps you use.

If you are part of a government funded school or tertiary educations institution, ask them to help you get licence exempt. If you got the correct documents to show maybe we can help you then. No offense but we worked hard to get our networks in the state they are today, and then someone with a omni comes and creates crap load noise. In my opinion the 2.4 and 5.8 spectrums wasnt put out there for commercial use.
