Hi all,

This years 'January poverty' looks to seep into the rest of the year. I have just moved house (which in itself is a huge expense) and because I was moving out of my ex's place I had to buy a whole wack of stuff (fridges and the likes).

SO, I now sit here seriously skint and desperate to make a few extra bucks to tide me over. I have registered with a few house sitting services and pet care services, but wondered if there was anything else I could look into? I'm also going to get in touch with some estate agents to see if the need sitters for show houses. None of the above are get rich quick schemes but if I could pull in an extra R1000+ then I may just make it through the month.

Any ideas from the pool of wisdom that is mybb?

Well not a way to make more money - but how about cutting down on what you can right now?

Cellphones, clothes, drinks, entertainment, petrol etc

I used to make extra cash from promo's. U dont necessarily have to do them, they need ppl to manage the promoters, get around R200 + a day for 4 hours work. I got R65 an hour by the time i quit....

I have 2 cellphones - private is on prepaid & business is paid by the company. Buying clothes isnt going to be an option for a while. I dont drink. I hardly go out but I do spend alot on DVDs and as for petrol .. I live 2km away from the office so petrol expenses are at a minimum too. Under normal circumstances I can usually come out in a month, its just that I've incurred a whole bunch extra because of the move and I'd like to pay those off ASAP. I am trying to be as frugal as possible but at this point I'm just not going to make ends meet...

Shouldn't have left your ex ;)

So I - er - am supposed to get one knee :/

How about sellings thing?

1. Do not rent/buy DVD's.
2. If you are bored and need entertainment, join your local library and read instead of watching DVDs.
3. Walk the 2km to work and save even more, because you won't use petrol.
4. Eat 2 minutes noodles.
5. Advertise your services as a dog walker in the neighbourhood.
6. Waiting tables
7. Babysitting

That's all I can think of right now.

I used to make extra money tutoring maths and science to high school students, and some other people I know did the same with languages. If you have a qualification, chances are there is someone looking for help with his/her studies.

bread and water? :p

/runs away

what about online? is there nothing on the net that you could do for extra cash?

What skills do you have? Can you moonlight in the industry you work in?

How about after hours work at a DVD shop?

yip, look into doing promos, my little sister does them every few weeks for r65-80 per hour, she could do more if she was not sooooooo lazy...

...maybe (allthough i'm sure if its a big timg here in sa) advertise in your local paper about housesitting, babysitting

Waiting tables and bartending is a good way to make money... And it's somewhat instant; you get your tips IMMEDIATELY.

The money's good. Ladies, if they put in effort, make anything from R400 to R1000 per shift.

The downside is that if you have a 9 - 5 job, you're going to struggle to find a shift that will suit your schedule (except weekends maybe?). And when you work night shifts as a bartender, you're pretty much a zombie the next day (especially if you're just starting out). The other bad thing is that if you don't have any experience, you'll struggle to find somewhere that will take you on as a waiter / bartender immediately... They'll require training etc. And even so, they end up not giving you the good (R400 - R1000) shifts.

But it's something to consider if you really get desperate. And if you're in the Pretoria or Johannesburg area, I can probably pull some strings :)

Waitering and bartending is perfect if you have a 9to5 job and need extra cash fast.

Most good restaurants has a position for a host/hostess and you should get paid in anything from R200 upwards depending on your role.
Waitering can take up to a week to get some good cash.
Iit will however give you instant cash and you should be able to earn anything from R200 to a R1000 - I used to walk away with an average of R800 per night.

Bartending is the other thing.
I am averaging about R400 per night and I work from about 6pm to 2 am and it is more fun than work.
