I was given an oldish 3.5" 160 gig Maxtor Ide hard drive and when doing a format using an external enclosure I noticed the drive getting extremely hot (where its hard to touch for more than 10 seconds). It was also making soft clicking sounds when I was browsing though the data, not sure if this is normal.

Do you think its safe to store data on this drive?

What speed is the HDD? If it's 7200RPM then it's normal - but I would look at ways and means to cool it off.

Not at all the heat would not worry me the clicking noise would worry me in a major way.

Its very soft noise, sounds like those old hard drives. Only happens when you click on large files

do not use that drive,or put it in a freezer bag and freeze it over night:Dnext day use it and if the clicking sound is gone then you have a problem.

LOL! i had to use oven gloves to remove it from the enclosure

Get HDDlife (http://hddlife.com/) and check that the SMART values are within the given threshold. Things such as error correction retry count and track seek error count are critical things to look out for.

I recall that the Maxtor IDE drives I had a number of years ago were always hot - could not hold them at all. Nothing a fan couldn't fix... if it's mounted in the case next to the front fan, you should be fine.

If it makes a noise, then change it... :)
