I've got a 384 K Openweb Gold account for the past 2 years I've been able to download off hosts such as Rapidshare and Megaupload at a minimum of 20 KBps and maximum of around 30-40 KBPS, however for the past 2 weeks - speed has suddenly dropped to between 1 and 10 KBPS.

Can anyone suggest what the problem MIGHT be or what to try?, Openweb has confirmed that the account I'm using has been tested and works fine.

Resetting port ussually works for me also ask for another ip address :)

Thanks for the Quick Replies!, could this be a faulty modem?... if so what's the best way to check?

Where are you located?

Im on the Hillcrest exchange and I have ruled everything out except really congested exchange.
Past 3 weeks speeds are awful, 10kb/s http on a 4mb line. And its only really after 5pm and weekends. Therefore I'm quite confident that the exchange is congested. Just surprised that no one else has complained.

So you might be sitting on a congested exchange?

So you've ruled out dry joints on your line, faulty jumper in the SDC, wiring issue on the MDF, faulty DSLAM port, etc. ?

I ruled them out because during the day speeds are good up till 5pm.
Latency averages 30ms over 20k pings.

After 5pm or 6pm latency averages 170ms.

So I'm assuming if it's line related problems it would be consistently bad?

Also all attenuation values seem to be in the designated ranges.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

There is an explanation: Telkom guy that i spoke to (i have the same isssue) mentioned that this new Telkom Uncapped 3 month special has had a significant impact as they are currently installing 100+ lines per week in our area alone. This has resulted in a massive increase in usage which their last mile backbone can not deal with.

They busy investigating it, and i guess if we wait until approx March, most ppl would be cancelling their free uncapped account as they would then need to start paying. I am in the process (depending on Telkom feedback today) to downgrade my 4mb line to 384kb and then taking the Vodacome 20G for R499 special until end of Feb.

If that is what he said then he should find alternative employment. If the last mile was the problem then they would not be able to connect you to the DSLAM. The issue lies in the backhaul beyond the DSLAM.

Fair. Could also be a localised issue (e.g. a faulty DSLAM module) as statistically bandwidth usage drops after 6pm (when businesses shut down).

reset port, ask openweb or telkom to do that. If that doesn't work, openweb should create a new username and password for you (thats what they did to me when i had the same problem).

Still problematic :-(

Okay... Here's an Update.

1. I've had Telkom reset the Port.
Download speeds still under 15 Kbps
2. I've tried 5 different accounts.
Download speeds still under 15 Kbps
3. I've tried 2 different Routers
Download speeds still under 15 Kbps

Telkom insists that everything is fine on my line, I'm now going to take the Router to someone else's house with a 384K line and see if there's any difference.

Update... All fine at my friends house... Telkom is incompetant.

have you tried your ADSL line with no phones and no filter on it (just MODEM connected )
do you have any extensions on your telephone line
do you have a long cord on your line
all of the above can impact on the speed of ADSL
Just some things to try
