Previously I mentioned that according to the http://adsl.telkomsa.net/ site, I'm clocking 100's of Megs when my PC is off and I'm not at home.

At the same time I download stuff and the Telkom ADSL ONLINE TRACKING TOOL shows nothing.

Well today I was really p'd off because a 150MB download timed out at 110MB. I figured, well there I just wasted a good 100MB of my precious 3GB.

That was 12 hours ago. The graph has updated and for September the 3rd it shows NOTHING!!! The bar for the 2nd and 3rd of September looks exactly the same.

OK, maybe I shouldn't complain... But what if it also works the other way round?

Yeah, and what about all those ppl claiming to download in excess of 6GB without being capped.

I now can positively say that I do not trust Telkom's stats and that this must definetely qualify as fraud, or at least the worst kind of incompetence in the whole of the ICT industry.

Ha! The 110 MB of Tuesday still isn't showing. I've now got three days showing no new activity.

They must have some very dumb programmers or otherwise very daft managers who signed off on this stupid graph.

I can just see them "conjuring" some wonderful stats this weekend... Why? Because I'm not going to be online, and my PC will be off and history has shown that to be the perfect conditions for my account to run up the Megs. Weird huh?

Yup! Just as I expected. My powered-down PC apparently did more than a 100MB worth of downloading while I wasn't home...

Dear Telkom
WTF is the idea of faking stats, when we can all see that it's
1) not accurate and
2) stupid?
Sincerely
ADSL Sucker

This is a serious problem. If your Telkom stats are wrong well ..... then your are getting royally screwed when you supposedly hit your "cap"!

We have installed IFMonitor on our linux box that acts as our gateway in order to track our own usage independant of Telkom's stats engine(s). It can be downloaded from http://ifmonitor.preteritoimperfeito.com/

Not sure what is available for Windows gateways / standalone Windows machines.

Hi all, I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one that smells something funny here...

My story:
We installed ADSL about 2 months ago at our office and NO problem at all. Last month we topped ad 2.7 gig. Now for the surprise. On the 3'rd of September I recwived an email stating taht we have used more than 80% of the cap limit. I thought it must have been a delayed mail from last month, so ignored it.

On the 4'th we were notified that we have UPLOADED more than 4 gigs! As of today we have somehow managed (with the cap) to UPLOAD over 7 gigs!

Download curently stands at something like 400 megs!

Anyone else had a similar experience yet?

Guys, check your traffic logs, i had a similar problem where a Telkom DNS server kept on updating my ADSL router, this caused me to be capped within a week. According to telkom helpdesk this is normal (Yea right, It's normal to send 1Gig of updates to me).

What we need is a Telkom Watchdog... like the banks now have one that keeps them on their toes and who the public can complain to when a bank tries to screw them.

Either that or we need that darn SNO now! Only good competition can really make a company care about how their customers perceive their service.

To you ppl who speak to Telkom (RPM et al):
Ask them who do we complain to if Telkom pulls this kind of stunts. And if they say helpdesk - slap them!

I STILL HAVEN'T RECEIVED ANY RESPONSE TO ANY OF THE FORM POSTS I MADE ON THE TELKOM WEBSITE ABOUT VARIOUS LEGIT CONCERNS AND COMPLAINTS.

Hi Cubehre

Thanks for your activity on our forums.

I did raise these points in our meeting, but did not get a definite reply. I think ICASA can be seen as a Telkom watchdog, but we are all well aware that it is more of a miniature poodle than a ferocious pit-bull. Steven White did mention that unanswered complaints are unacceptable, but I must have 100 of them at least. The website complaint form is like a bottomless pit. I wonder where it sends the complaint to…most probably directly to the recycle bin :-)

Please guys, I need help!

Yesterday I posted a message stating that according to Telkom we UPLOADED more than 6 gigs in the 1'st 9 days of this month. This morning we "somehow" UPLOADED about 1.8 gig more! That is UPLOADING!

Is this speed actually possible?

I spoke to telkom and their reply was that their logs are quite accurate. They sent me (after about 100000 telephone calls) a log of connection times but it does not say much.

We are a small company with about 6 computers. We conenct directly to the router (without a firewall).

Can I maybe somehow set up our server (W2K server) as gateway/NAT and monitor that way???

Is there ANY way to monitor the traffic? The telkom guys says we must have a virus or something. But I checked all pc's and NOTHING. I installed a personal firewall on some of them to check and nothing suspicious yet...

Please, any ideas would help!!!! (I'm a programmer who became network admin, so my knowledge might not be all up there ;-)

I would also suspect a virus of some kind. When my ADSL was installed I was not at home and it was connected to my Windoze machine. When I got home 1.5 hours later I was infected and had uploaded some 100+ megs ... unpatched IIS server was the culprit.

I would definately recommend installing a firewall of some sort. Do a search thru the forums as there has been some pointers previously posted.

Yes, you can.
Please read my post in
http://www.myadsl.co.za/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=275

Routing and Remote Access Manager will also give you an accurate metric of your usage.
Mine corresponds reasonably well Telkom's.

We need a more formal section for listng complaints Telkom's not answering then. Telkom's not going to read any complaints if it's loaded with "emotion". So somewhere where we strip out the insults and just list the cold hard facts.

It's real difficult I know - because if your'e already halfway through your cap - you just feel like screaming!

So RPM - can we mail'em to you and you list them in a closed forum or do you think we can have a section where we won't see it turn into a discussion or a mudslinging?

Download DUMeter from www.dumeter.com It will give you a 30 day trail period, butit actually works fine. Just make sure about teh settings, else it will measure traffic locally as well.

Hi, guys...

Funny thing. I asked telkom to change my username/password and what do u know? Everything seems normal now!

That means someone somehow managed to get our company capped in the 1'st 4 days of the month! ;-)

Seems that someone used our username/password and stole our bandwidth? Is that actually possible?

Langbaba

Hi Langbaba,

Yes it is, you need to secure your router to prevent access to your ISP logon details if you are using the router to login for you.

Try the following:

enter http://192.168.10.200 into explorer

enter the password "root" if you have not changed it, and you should see the "Quick Setup - Protocol" page display.

select - PPP over Ethernet ( RFC 2516 )
press NEXT
press NEXT again

enter your ISP Provided USERNAME and PASSWORD
press NEXT
press FINISH
press SAVE
press RESTART

wait till the web page displays "System Ready"

That is it, you now have a router that can auto logon, but whilst we are in there it is a good idea to set up some basic security.

on the left click "Basic Config " and then "System"

under "System Parameters:"
enter a username and password to replace the default of "root and root". Write it down and stick it to the router so that you can get back in again if you forget it. This will prevent people on the Internet from playing with your router settings.
press FINISH

On the left click "Telnet / Console"
Select a user profile and enter a username and password
repeat for the other two or select and delete them (Your choice)

On the left press "Save & Restart"
press SAVE
press RESTART

If you make a mistake or forget the password etc. don't panic.
Turn off the Router, press and hold the reset button (next to the power switch) turn on the router (Whilst holding the reset) and wait 40 seconds. Release the reset and your router is back to the factory default settings.

Hope that helps till you get your firewall,

Cheers
Chris

You know that explorer "remember password" feature which allows you to save passwords on forms. When you've got two fields on a form and say you enter the username, windows "autocompletes" the password.

I use that for my Telkom ADSL stats page. OK, I know it's a security risk etc. but no-body else has access to my PC. The thing is that it's always just a quick click click and I see my download stats and graph.

Well - along the lines of this topic about the stats being fraudulently fake or at least idiotically generated - coz it's wrong!!@#@! (Sh*t - I get sidetracked)

Well - in line with all of that... I clicked to my stats today and guess what message the Telkom stats lottery p*sses out:

"<b>Login unsuccessful, please note that the online tracker is only available to Telkom Internet ADSL users only</b>"

Yup - and me with my "form autocomplete" can't be typing my password wrong.

This happened before and I didn't have to retype my password for it to come right... A couple of hours later it just did. So it's really not something I'm doing wrong and nothing is wrong with my PC.

Telkom Telkom Telkom - If you can't even get the the user authentication right - How the phuk are we supposed to believe that you are giving us legit stats.

ps. Oh and that ^#$ Casseburri yesterday said on ITWeb that their not ready for convergence yet... So how did Telkom bribe the Gov now again?

Sorry for going off on a tangent - BUT THIS BLOODY TELECOMS MESS IS JUST MAKING MY BLOOD BOIL - and all I wanted to do is to see what crap Telkom's spitting out on my stats this morning.

Telkom is including a nice little fold-in with their invoices this month.

"Super Fast Lane ADSL"

Nowhere does it mention 3GB Cap.

What they do claim is:

Instant, ALWAYS AVAILABLE ACCESS for a fixed monthly rental
