Well...

An end to policing the unpoliceable

The FIA's decision to end its own pathetically inept attempts to control the issuing of team orders should not been seen as a surrender to Ferrari, as some have claimed, as much as an acceptance it was trying to police the unpoliceable.

For more than five decades team orders were an accepted part of the sport and while they provoked a few moans, nobody got too upset. But it was the complete dominance of Ferrari and Michael Schumacher which had those running the sport desperately looking for ways to curb them.

In Austria in 2002 Rubens Barrichello was ordered to allow Schumacher past to take the win - so dominant was Schumacher anyway that it was hardly needed but it angered sponsors and spectators, and so the FIA who saw the last chance of something resembling a competitive drivers' championship disappear.

So team orders were banned as a knee-jerk reaction, only it soon became clear that enforcing the rule was impossible. So a murky world of coded messages and limp-wristed enforcement followed.

In Germany this year Felipe Massa was ordered to allow team-mate Fernando Alonso past for the win, wrecking the clearly disheartened Massa's season and turning opinion against Ferrari and Alonso. The FIA was almost powerless to act and fined Ferrari the derisory sum of $100,000.

By scrapping the rule at least the FIA has admitted what everyone else knew for years. Team orders have always happened and will continue to do so. Anyone who pretended otherwise was a blinkered fool.

I think it's the right decision. With so little decent passing opportunities on track, the sport needs other tactical opportunity.

I see the excuses are starting early:

Pirellis might not solve Schumacher's problems - Brawn

Ross Brawn has warned that the new Pirelli tyres will not be the answer to all of Michael Schumacher's problems in 2011.

Schumacher made a stuttering return to Formula One in 2010 and struggled to come to terms with the relative lack of front-end grip from the Bridgestone tyres compared to when he last raced in 2006. Last year Brawn explained the problem: "Michael's deficit was generally in slow-speed technique, not high speed, where bravery and car control are the factors."

Brawn is confident Schumacher is learning after an "encouraging" finish to the 2010 season, but admitted the Pirelli tyres could not be seen as a magic bullet for the seven-time world champion.

"It's a little premature to say that," Brawn told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "During the tests in Abu Dhabi we didn't see any big differences in performance compared with Bridgestone. But it is clear that in changing the supplier, the car will have to be different and there may be a lot of changes during the winter tests."

When asked what he got Schumacher for his 42nd birthday earlier this week, Brawn said: "I didn't have to think about a present because I already know what he wants - a competitive car."

He added: "I am sure he will have a better time this season."

The old fart should've just let his - far as I'm concerned - more than a little ill-begotten legacy fade into history, instead of torpedoing it with a thus far pathetic return.

I was watching some soccer the other day and listening to arsene wenger, he said players should play until they cannot anymore because when they get old they cannot go back so you just keep going until you cannot anymore.

Granted shummi's come back has been terrible but he won't grow old wondering. He is going until he cannot anymore and i wonder if i would want to be remembered as a legend or live my life for me. I think i would do what shummi is because when he is dead who cares what people say.

Regrettably these "old farts" run the show and everyone has to tow line.

Google says this is shummi

What's he got to do with F1?

Supersport should broastcast it in hd as the feed they get will be HD.

Awesome stuff at least the picture will be better even if i don't have hd :D.

Listening to alonso and massa moan about the changes makes me wonder if they realize we are the reason they are so highly paid and regarded? Without us they are nothing and f1 dies so get in the car and drive.

They make it seem like they are the reason we watch f1 :D. Bow down bitches and make it exciting for the people paying your high salaries. Who gives a F if you go from 1st to 4th we wanna see that shyte go down :D

I concur doob, we want to see racing. It's about time that we get to witness a multi-way title fight, some real action ON THE TRACK and not some *****in soapie filled with Alonso's tears
As someone here on mybb so eloquently stated.. that "hand-bag swinging prima donna" and is Brazillion team-mate needs to let their results do the talking

He (Massa) is obviously talking on behalf of somebody else, cause I'd love to know when last he has seen the front of the grid to actually be in that position.. no actually I don't. Who gives a F.

imo, Give Kubica his seat and we'll have an epic season of F1

I'm really getting sick of Alonso's arrogance....in a recent interview he was asked "who is gonna be your biggest threat this season?" he replied "Michael Schumacher" ffs does he think MS is better then SV.

SV isn't a great racer. Put him the middle of the pack and he folds. We've seen it many times. Much like Massa actually, put him out in front and he will run away with it. Alonso, Hamilton, Schumacher, Kubica and even Button are better racers.

He is blindingly fast though. The amount of pole position laps he pulled out of nowhere is crazy. He just really needs to work on his wheel to wheel racing, which I am sure will come with experience.

OK, if you removed JB from the list then I'd be inclined to agree with you, Tarantula. :) JB is not a good driver (FULL STOP)! Don't believe everything Martin and Jonathan tells you.
