SAVONA - Robert Kubica is now undergoing surgery at the hospital Santa Corona in Pietra Ligure. Doctors are taking action on the Polish, whose conditions are serious but not enough to threaten the survival metterene, and issued a medical report to the intervention ended, at around 14: for now we know for sure that the pilot reported "multiple trauma" In particular to a leg (probably to the femur), and arm and right hand. Poland, the father insists, however, in pointing out that the 26 year old is not life threatening.

While waiting for a clear picture of the situation, let's recap what happened to the unfortunate bearer of the Lotus Renault GP: around 8:35, few kilometers after the start of the first special stage of the Ronde of Andover, Kubica lost control in a sudden Joint-fast, in San Lorenzo, in the municipality of Testico, undergoing a violent impact. As the navigator Jakub Gerber is immediately released from the cockpit without consequence, Kubica is trapped in the Skoda Fabia S2000, timely medical attention and firefighters, who estrettato the former bishop of the BMW with all the necessary precautions . Kubica was flown by helicopter to the hospital Santa Corona in Pietra Ligure.

Official press release pushed out 2 hours, now due at 17h00 our time.

Man, that sucks ass... and that after leaving Valencia with the quickest time during last week's test. :(

One interesting possible side effect: Ayrton Senna made his first real impressions at the wheel of a black and gold JPS Lotus; maybe history is about to repeat with his nephew. I'm not personally convinced by young Bruno as things stand, but one can hardly judge a driver by a year piloting the most useless car on the grid... I do hope Renault gives him the opportunity.

He's not quite Ayrton standard IMO, but it's up to him to prove me wrong.

I think they will probably use him in the first few races and then stick someone else in there.

They are still operating on Robert as we speak, not looking good but let's hope

From tg sky news Italy, direct from the hospital
No fear for his life, no internal hemorragy, hand not to be amputated, trying to restore functions of the hand, surgery only in first phase, will end at approximately 20 CET, only after that the medical staff will give official information in a press conference

And from Autosport.com
An update from the hospital in the afternoon said that the operation on Kubica would continue until Sunday evening. And although amputation of the hand had been ruled out, it was too early to give a prognosis on how well the hand would recover from the injuries it suffered.

It was also confirmed that Kubica was out of immediate danger, and there was no threat to his life.

Kubica's injuries look almost certain to prevent him starting the season for Renault, with the first race of the campaign due to take place in Bahrain on March 13.

Renault will likely call on reserve driver Bruno Senna to fill in in the short term, but the team could opt for a more experienced driver if Kubica faces a more lengthy lay-off.

Wow! The pictures look scary & worrying. I hope he gets to race again. These guys dream of being in F1 before puberty!!! It'll be sad to see a career end so prematurely. Get well soon, mate. :(

from Autosprint website (my translation)

Only after 9 p.m. , when the delicate surgery will end, the real consequences of the accident for Robert Kubica will be known . The Polish driver is under surgery by mid-afternoon. The surgeons , among them Professor Igor Rossello, a luminary of microsurgery of the hand, are trying to heal tissue and reattach his right hand that has been virtually crushed in the accident. The guard-rail that has penetrated the car almost sliced the tissues of the hand, but fortunately, the artery was then reintegrated thanks to a difficult but succesful intervention
The surgeon team is working on the hand of Kubica hoping to save it, well knowing that the future mobility of the hand will have to be verified much later.
Otherwise, they will have to carry out the amputation.
There are less serious concerns with the other injuries. Kubica was trapped almost 90 minutes in the cockpit of the Skoda S2000. He suffers many fractures , both to the arm to the femur. We recall that since 2003, Kubica has a plaque on his right arm that he had already almost lost because of another accident. Because of the large number of transfusions the Pole has been submitted to, the prognosis is still reserved.

Phew, they are still at it, not looking that good.

Best wishes, Robert.

Not good... :(

Robert Kubica will be out of action for up to a year following his crash in a rally event in Italy. However, it is possible the injuries he suffered may bring down the curtain on his Formula One career.

Prof Igor Rossello, who operated on Kubica at the Santa Corona hospital, said the lengthy operation involved the "reconstruction [of] the whole anatomy of the forearm". He continued that while the operation on Kubica's badly-damaged hand had gone well, the next five to seven days were crucial as it was in that period that things could still go wrong.

When pressed, Rossello said it would be a year before Kubica can hope to have proper use of his right arm again, although he added "drivers are always very special patients".

Earlier, comments from his agent, Daniele Morelli, had raised worries that his career was in the balance. He said that surgeons were "trying to restore the functions of his right hand," adding: "They have already revascularised the limb and repaired the bone structure. Now they have to think about the muscular functions but Robert has strong character and he will make it."

If the operation is unsuccessful or only partially works, then he may be left with limited functionality and feeling in his hand. At a time drivers are being asked to press more and more buttons on the steering wheel, this would be very serious.

The fractures will heal, although given Kubica already has titanium bolts in his left arm following an accident in 2003 there may well be complications. But tendon damage is much harder and there is also no means of speeding his recovery.

It now seems clear Kubica will not race this season. But the real fear is that he may not return at all.

Many drivers have restrictions in their contracts as to what they can do off track in terms of risky sports or hobbies. Renault did not ban Kubica from rallying as being able to continue was a key part of any contract for him. As recently as November, Morelli said the big teams such as "McLaren, Red Bull, Ferrari or Mercedes wouldn't allow it." How Renault must be wishing it had been a little more insistent.

The operation is a success for now. We need to wait for a week or so to get a better idea long term prognosis.

So far so good... Thank you for the updates, kayvee.

No problem. Just been spending time trying to find some good news.

Nothing new on the LRGP website yet. I have heard reports saying he was out of the induced coma this morning and talking, complaining of pain at extremities, which is a good sign. Word from his management saying it's unlikely he will be in the car this year.

I have changed my mind about Senna, as it's not looking like a short term replacement scenario. Heidfeld maybe? They will need some experience.

Update from Autosport:

Robert Kubica has been informed as to the extent of his injuries incurred during his rallying accident in Italy on Sunday, according to his manager Daniel Morelli, who also reported that the Renault Formula 1 driver had full 'cerebral function'.

The Pole suffered a partially severed right hand and fractures to his right arm and leg after a barrier penetrated the Skoda he was driving on the first stage of the Ronde di Andora rally.

"I have finally talked to him and Robert has shown he understands everything perfectly," Morelli was quoted by IVG.it. "His cerebral activity is intact and we are extremely relieved.

"This really gives good hope. Obviously he feels a lot of pain to his leg and hand. He'll need time."

The hand specialist Dr Igor Rossello who took part in the operation was cautiously optimistic about Kubica's progress since the procedure, describing the results as 'extremely satisfying'.

He was quick to point out however that it was too early to predict whether Kubica's hand function had been permanently restored.

Still too soon to say when a return to the car would be.

Press release from Lotus Renault GP released minutes ago:
Robert’s general condition is much better today.

After spending the night under constant observation, he was briefly woken up by the doctors of the Santa Corona Hospital (Pietra Ligure) this morning. The Lotus Renault GP driver was then able to talk to his relatives. He was also able to move his fingers, which is encouraging for the rest of his recovery process.

Professor Mario Igor Rossello, Director for the Regional Centre of Hand Surgery at San Paolo Hospital in Savona, did not notice any swelling or infection on his right forearm, and this is another good sign, although it will be several days before it is known if the operation has been 100% successful.

In order to avoid any physical stress, Robert will be put under gentle medication in order to sleep for the next 24 hours at least. Meanwhile, the doctors will decide how they will treat his elbow and shoulder fractures. Robert may have to undergo surgery once again for this, but not for a few days.

Lotus Renault GP wishes to thank the Hospital of San Paolo (Savona) and the Santa Corona Hospital (Pietra Ligure) for their professional approach and their dedication.

Lotus Renault GP will issue another update on Robert’s condition later this evening.

Looking good, but time will tell.

There are some scary pics and vids out there from cars behind him in the stage. Not pretty :(

Thanks everybody for the updates.

Let's hope that he is able to make a full recovery, so we can see this young, talented driver behind the wheel of an F1 car again

It would be a serious shocker if this happened but honestly WTF are you rallying before the start of the f1 season.

That shyte it out right dangerous and you should be testing the living crap out of your simulator. If you want to be a f1 driver then drive a f1 car.

GL hope you recover full bud.

Really hoping that Kubica will make a comeback. Sounds like he was quite popular among his peers.

Kubica has made it quite clear on a few occasions that F1 alone does not fulfil his ambitions as a driver. It is in his contract that he is allowed to compete in rallies.

I don't think he should carry the blame in the matter... Webber broke his shoulder in a mountain biking accident last year, so what is one to do? Keep F1 drivers under lock and key & drive them to the tracks in prison buses? It was an unfortunate freak accident... it happens.
