...and he was 1.3 seconds quicker than the Stig's lap time (and only 0.7s off Vettel's time)... on a wet track.
 
I think trying to compare the laps is a bit silly, how wet was the track when the stig did it? I know it's england but they should try run the laps when it is dry but i guess that limits them to about 1 or 2 days a year :D

Stig was in the dry. 'twas Stig v1 (Perry McCarthy) though, Stig v2 did it in 1:44.4 - also in the dry - with Hamilton on a 1:44.7 on a wet track.
 
So basically the wet conditions don't really have much of an effect on the timing? I have noticed that as well when it's a bit wet i can fly around corners at almost the same speed i would in the dry. If i had slicks on my car then yea i would imagine the difference would be huge.

Hamiltons' lap wasn't that wet compared to say Mark Webber who did a 1:47. Hamiltons' lap would be better described as damp. Still would be interesting to see a dry lap from Hamilton, should be really close.

As for the stigs' they're not very good compared to the F1 drivers, even Rubens beat them.
 
O yea you see that is what annoys me actually because it seems they always do lap times on a different track.

They must build an indoor track :D. Perhaps have the track in a country that is not wet 99% of the time hahah

Lol! No, wet vs dry is big in terms of time, even just damp. Grip goes away. If you can do wet vs dry at the same speed, then your dry is not on the ragged edge ;)

Look at hamiltons time compared to vettel's. Tiny difference, vettel was dry the ham was wetish.

Have you actually watched the clip of Hamilton's lap? Webber on a wet track was 1:47.1 Hamilton will put Vettel to shame in the same machinery as far as ultimate pace goes. You might be able to question other elements of his driving here & there, but for my money he's the quickest guy in F1 at present...

Well we won't know that unless they both have dry runs but he has not been the quickest in f1 this year, where does he lie in the championship again? Why would he put vettel to shame in the same machinery? you still think the ham is better than vettel? Well let's hope they both drive for redbull so we can settle it once for all i guess because i cannot see without a doubt that hamilton is faster than vettel.

Vettel has broken all kinds of record, hamilton did the same so i cannot really say who is better. Both are super fast and only the same car would allow us to know. Hamilton is level pegging with button in the same car :eek:.

I see your point, Vettel's time in the dry wasn't on the ragged edge.

Seriously though guys, these times are not going to be exact science, Hamilton drove the car when it was alot younger, those cars surely lose compression over a year because of the way they are driven. They also have stock parts which may or may not need replacing when someone uses them. Not exact science. .7 seconds is as near as dammit.

Thats what happens when you DNF. Better to try and fail than not try at all IMO. Way more exciting.

Yea i have no issues with his driving, i just take offense to any claims that he is the best f1 driver :D. With vettel around that remark seems a bit premature. You could see vettel's talent even before redbull. The lad is highly talented and very fast, whether he is faster or slower the ham hopefully next season we find out.

Who said anything about better?! They're both pretty damn impressive...

All I'm saying is, were I a betting man, I'd wager on Hamilton being able to pip Vettel in ultimate pace in similar machinery. That is borne out by the Top Gear times - the closest we've currently got to representative times in the same car, even if that car is a tired old Suzuki. Watch Vettel's lap, then watch Hamiltons & then come to realise that - given track conditions - for Hamilton to only be .7 of a second off Vettel's time is pretty darn impressive.

As an aside, I don't think we'll ever have a definitive answer as I think it's highly unlikely that they'll ever be paired in the same team. Having ever-so-slightly mismatched team mates is clearly the way things are done in F1. Equal pairings (Prost/Senna and Alonso/Hamilton spring to mind) have rarely turned out well.
 
Well i am not sure one track with one car can really tell us who is the quickest :D but lay your bet when he joins redbull.

Bare in mind one thing, redbull would jump at the chance to sign hamilton. They want world championships and with vettel and hamilton together unless they nail each other you could expect a 1,2. We are forgetting alonso as well who has proven he can win races in a dodgy car and can win races in a good car so i am not even sure hamilton is better than alonso or that vettel is better than alonso. Hamilton didn't exactly destroy alonso when they had the same car. Seemed like a tight contest to me. I hope redbull sign the ham for next season and i hope ferrari continue their good form.
 
Yeah, I reckon it's too close to call with Hamilton, Alonso and Vettel in the same car. No doubt they're at the top.

Kubica and Petrov are also impressive - pity they haven't got good rides. Red Bull should consider Kubica IMO.

I think the decision on getting two good guys together would hinge more around salaries...

Put him in the mclaren team and ham in the redbull, leave alonso in ferrari. Insane!!!!!!!!

In his defense he is starting to look like the massa before he got nailed by that loose bit. Add to that he has to wait until alonso thinks it is fine for his pit stop. It seems he cannot pit before alonso even if alonso stays out for 3-6 laps he must wait.
 
F1 in HD would make me go out and get that HD PVR at long last, that's for sure!

I'm hoping to make 2012 the first year where I actually manage t watch every race - it had better be a good season! :)
