F1 2012 thread

The tyres are dictating who is going to win the race. 5 different race winners in which every team that has won has made huge strides from one race to the next without really improving the car? McLaren went from the best car in Aus to midfield car in Barhain, same for the other teams, Williams had decent pace in the other races but all of a sudden a win? Reb-Bull win in Barhain yesterday they were nowhere, today Vettel managed to get points but Webber couldn't get past a Force India. F1 is just about tyre management, you might push and win or loose like Raikkonen in China. The racing is interesting but its fake. They might as well starting spraying water on tracks in the dry to spice it up.

Next race winner will be Kimi :D

Hells yea, different winner in all gp's hahahahahahaha, imagine one of those back markers coming right like heiki :D. Bring on fake over boring i reckon.

I gotta admit i dunno what was more exciting the gp or premier league, what an epic day. Awesome gp, the most insane football ever seen.

Also mermaid you forget that the teams brought new parts to this gp, mclaren seemed to go backwards as have redbull but williams might have got it right. We have seen it in the last few years, the cars transform through out the year. They develop and added part.

What is amazing is how well alonso is doing, he never bitches and he just keeps going. Massa is a lost cause and should be removed ASAP, may as well put in a rookie.

Whilst I agree that the racing isn't as 'pure' as I'd like to see it be, one can't deny that it does make for good television. Yes, tyre management plays a huge roll, but arguably no bigger than what fuel load did in the days of refuelling during pit stops. Formula 1 isn't a sprint race, it's a marathon; drivers (and whole teams for that matter) have to contend with all the variables equally in order to come out on top.

Congrats to Pastor - staving off Alonso in order to claim his first victory showed class I personally didn't think he had. Lewis also impressed, what with stretching his tyres further than anyone else and managing to attack Nico in the final few corners having done a stop less - impressive stuff.

Schumacher can **** right off - his driving ability hasn't kept up with his ego & he's becoming a liability to F1. Time to sod off for good.

Huge blaze in Williams pits

14639.jpg

A massive post-race fire in the Williams garage as the team celebrated Pastor Maldonado's victory at the Spanish Grand Prix left the pit lane shrouded in acrid smoke as firefighters rushed in to tackle the blaze.

Early reports suggested there were injuries and it was believed that the fire started after a KERS-related explosion. Television footage showed an intense fire rising at the back of the Williams garage, while a number of teams reacted to help. Four Williams mechanics and one from Force India are believed to be being treated at the circuit's medical centre.

Caterham's Heikki Kovalainen also tweeted: "Couple of our guys got injuries, burns and maybe one broken wrist, no news on Williams guys I hope they're ok".

A Caterham statement soon followed, reading: "All the team's employees have been accounted for and four people have been taken to the circuit medical centre for examination; one with a minor hand injury and three with respiratory issues."

Frank Williams was quickly removed from the garage and later told Sky Sports "Everything was OK when I left, but there was a lot of smoke around so I don't really know. Secondary information says no-one's hurt but I must go and verify that because I think the police are still there."

Force India's chief operations officer Otmar Szafnauer also said that he thinks the teams reacting well to the situation.

"We were a few garages away having our debrief when we saw all the smoke and ran over. It smelled like an electrical fire to me - I've heard it could be a KERS pack - but we don't know. We all ran over to help and I've got to go and check on one of our mechanics who I believe inhaled some smoke. I think he's at the medical centre here so I'm going to go and check on him. I believe he's OK. We all ran down with our fire extinguishers to help put it out. It's good that we do have fire extinguishers almost everywhere in the garage but that is a bit fortunate that almost all the teams went down to help put it out."

More to follow

If that turns out to be the case it would'be been Senna's car parked in the garage. Trust Schumacher to blow up the Williams pits! :D

...but how on earth did mclaren think they could do a 2 stop race LOL. When i heard that i thought hmmmmm you guys need to replace your staff.

How many stops did they make then? 8th place was quite something and he did some pretty awesome overtaking, that aside, the conspiracy theorist in me says the rear left tyre man was on fuel duty this weekend lol.

Oh look! Williams used 'special fuel' :D
And burned it before it could be analysed :p

Shortly after a team photo was taken to celebrate Pastor Maldonado's victory, around 90 minutes after the end of the race, it is believed that fuel exploded while it was being prepared for transportation as part of the post-race procedure.

+1, though it's different when you're not in the spotlight and nobody expects much from you - way less pressure. Same for Vettel this year.

Schumacher continues to criticize Pirelli
http://www.f1zone.net/news/schumacher-continues-criticising-pirelli/13840/
Just under three weeks after the Bahrain Grand Prix, and 7-time World Champion Michael Schumacher is unrelenting in his criticism of Pirelli’s tyres. The German driver has likened these tyres to ‘driving of raw eggs’, and believes it’s playing too much of a big effect on the racing.

The Pirelli tyres for 2012 have undoubtedly provided the fans with an exciting opening four races, however Michael Schumacher believes they detract from the racing as the 7-time World Champion says you can’t overdo it during the race.

“I just think that they’re playing a much too big effect because they are so peaky and so special that they don’t put our cars or ourselves to the limit,” said Michael Schumacher, in an interview with CNN. “We drive like on raw eggs and I don’t want to stress the tires at all. Otherwise you just overdo it and you go nowhere.”

I get his point of view, don't completely agree that it's bad for the sport, but can totally understand why it's frustrating to not be able to drive on the limit of the vehicle's potential.

Q: So let’s move to a more concrete topic - the tyres. Up and down the paddock you hear that they are a mystery, we don’t understand them, so on and so forth. Is it up to modern day Formula One drivers to find answers to that puzzle?
MS: Indeed tyres are more critical than in any other past year of my F1 career, so you are very likely to find somebody in every team who is making that a topic. This year’s tyres are so special that you are always in a guessing game each weekend to find out what works and what doesn’t. Maybe it’s a bit sad, as you probably should be able to concentrate on other things, but that’s how it is so we all have to deal with it.

Q: So the tyre situation in 2012 is even a novelty for somebody with 20 years’ experience?
MS: Yes. You think that with a single tyre supplier it should be possible to make standardized tyres that work for everybody. And it is probably a bit strange to think that a tyre will crown the champion this year. Very likely this is positive for Pirelli because they are constantly in the media, but I personally wish that they would find another way to achieve that awareness! (smiles)

Pastor celebrating his historic win :D

That's his cousin I believe...

Schumacher can **** right off - his driving ability hasn't kept up with his ego & he's becoming a liability to F1.

I think from Schumacher's reaction on the track and off, it was clear he was expecting Senna to just let him through.

Shummi is acting like a cry baby, he was so much faster than senna and made his move so late that i don't think senna know where to move, with that much speed shummi should have already decided his line because it was like taking candy from a baby.

He should quit bitching and blaming, take it like a man and move on. He needs to reitre though and let a youngster take the spot. He had his time and it's obvious he cannot hack it anymore.

Would be good to see the come-back driver justifying his return.

Burn!!! but let's be honest he has had some very bad luck. Look at hamilton in the last two years, he went out of his way to smash into everyone so i suppose we should give him a break. He is looking as rookie as hamilton did last year. Although he is about 9 crashes behind.

:wtf:

Gosh........

Williams garage gutted by fire

Barcelona - Seven Formula 1 personnel were taken to hospital, and 31 tended to by circuit doctors, after a fire gutted the Williams garage while the team were celebrating winning Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix.

The former champions had earlier gathered outside the Circuit de Catalunya garage for a team photograph to mark Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado's first career victory and their first in nearly eight years.

Team founder and principal Frank Williams, who is in a wheelchair, had been in the garage when it filled with smoke and flames but was quickly wheeled to safety, his daughter Claire told reporters.

The blaze was fought by staff from Williams, Caterham and Force India from the pit lane side before circuit fire services arrived.

The governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) said in a statement that all but seven of the 31 team members who went to the Circuit Medical Centre had been released.

The seven were transferred to local hospitals for treatment.

Williams said the fire had “originated from the fuel area” and three of their staff were in hospital.

“The team, the fire services and the police are working together to determine the root cause of the fire and an update statement will be released in due course,” Williams added.

Caterham, who have an adjacent garage to Williams, said four of their staff had been taken to the medical centre for examination - one with a minor hand injury and three with respiratory issues.

Force India deputy team principal Bob Fernley said one of his staff had suffered smoke inhalation.

The fire, with thick, acrid black smoke billowing out of the garage and across the paddock, started about 90 minutes after the end of the race.

Maldonado was photographed carrying his 12-year-old cousin piggyback through the smoke, with the youngster clutching the winner's trophy.

Photographs also showed Brazilian Bruno Senna's car in the middle of a gutted and charred garage. Maldonado's had been parked elsewhere under post-race parc ferme rules.

Team officials and guests were ushered to safety and the area cordoned off. A medical helicopter was seen to take off after a while.

The fire was the second in the Formula 1 paddock in five races this season, with one breaking out in the Lotus hospitality area at the Malaysian circuit in March. - Reuters

Lol at Monaco? He rather get drunk and party.
Sasha claim Grosjean would win, I tweet told him he smoking his socks, I was right lol.

Maldonado did well, far faster than any other driver, Kimi woke up towards the end when everyone was conserving tyres, hard to tell if was faster or they were slow. Also how did their car all of a sudden work? No dominant team, they doing it on purpose.

Not a fan of these tyres, seems the last 5 laps anyone can win it, make the rest of the race unnecessary, I think the future races will all have them driving slow and a last 20 minutes of the race all hell breaks lose...

Enjoyed Vettels, last sprint to the finish.

Schumacher being very... Him. Moaning about tires. He's not the center of the sport and he's letting his frustration affect his driving. I am sure another young driver would appreciate the car he has and drive the socks off it. Tires are a reality and he must suck it up.

So glad Vettel hasn't ran away with the championship lead. Alonso having the worst car of the traditional leaders, his joint top standing in the table shows his skill. Respect to the guy.

Lotus have a tiny bit more to go to make the car versatile, but both their drivers are quick!! I'd be super happy seeing Kimi win in Spa this year! At least now we get to see how good the younger drivers are because of more evenly matched cars! I mean where we're Williams last year. This race he had solid pace and tire management!

The funny thing is Senna done a Schummi. The guy changed lines in a braking zone. Rewind to 2009 when Webber went airborne because he had DRS open and a driver - Heikki Kovalainen in this case - changed lines in a braking zone and at that speed Webber had no room to react.

I get the feeling had Schummi been in front and moved in the breaking zone everybody else would crying long tears as Michael would have been guilty of another of his infamous blocking moves. I get the distinct feeling 2009 - present is everything Schumcher-haters have been waiting for; a chance to attack someone that was dominant for so long. Coulthard could not leave it alone and he even said he's not trying to sound like he's bashing Michael - could have fooled me - because Michael whipped his a$$ for a number of years. I've noticed any chance the commentators get to rag Michael, they do.

I do wish he never came back though, it has not been good for his legacy, but he's there and I'm about tired of the thinly veiled anti-Schumacher sentiment that is rife in that commentary box.
