F1 2013 thread

Q: (Livio Oricchio - O Estado de Sao Paulo) A question to all drivers. What do you think the fans of Formula One will think when they hear or they read that the winner is saying "I'm sorry to win, the second should be here and the third says "I'm sorry to be here my team-mate that is fourth should be here"?
SV: "I think it's great for you because you have a lot to write about. We have quite a while until the next race it's good for you, I'm sure you don't get bored. I didn't say, I think generally, you know I'm not sorry to win, I think we both of us drove a strong race today but Mark should have won. I did the mistake. I can only repeat it now. People can think in a way what they want, they will always make up their own story, but as I said I wasn't aware until we took off our helmets really, so I'm sorry for that. But surely I will try to make up, first of all explain downstairs what happened.

MW: "As I say, I'm a big sports fan and the fans of any sport will want it to be a perfect world always. We want it to be pure, we want it to be as we see - football, boxing, cycling, whatever. We want it to be real. But there is an element of naivety... for me watching some sport as well and in the case of some Formula One fans watching this situation. It's impossible for everybody to understand everything and that's the same for me watching a football match or a Champions League match. Sometimes there are things you don't understand because sometimes there is naivety."

LH: "I don't have anything to say."

Feel sorry for the drivers that have to give way for the "Heroes"

"... I wasn't aware until we took off our helmets really..." Seriously? Tosser.
Mark Webber Silverstone 2011 underdog hero sticking it to the team, Mark Webber 2013 Malaysia poor sod got robbed. Pot calling the kettle black

My 2 cents:

MW vs SV - SV has to realize he is in a team. The Team puts him in that car. Respect the orders. I think Vettel is a bit to concerned with breaking all the records....

LH vs NR - BS call from the team. Rosberg had pace, tires & fuel in his advantage... No wonder LH feels bad...

Ferarri - Alonso ...wtf? who made that idiot call? Dumbest move of the Season.

Like I said, highlight of the race :D

About team orders - it was this very situation that saw team orders being banned. I wouldn't be surprised if that discussion came up again. It IS a team sport, but it's ironically also a one man for the win sport.

If you asked me, I'd say the best way to cut costs in F1 is to only allow one driver and car for each team, then open the field up to more teams :)
Merc's decision was no different to Redbulls, quite simply both drivers were told to tone their cars down and not risk the team's position. If you allow team orders, that will always happen. The difference between F1 and a true team sport is that a goal in a team sport benefits the entire team. You don't become the Football World Champion for scoring the most goals in a season.

Merc's decision was totally different, hamilton limped home, there would have been no need to fight. Rosberg could simply have over taken hamilton and both drivers would be happy.

Now you have an embarrassed hamilton and angry rosberg. So in terms of managing your team, ross brawn failed. He is going to tear apart their friendship, a good decision would have been lewis, you need to allow rosberg to pass or you will run out of juice. O well i guess rosberg now knows he is playing second fiddle when he is just as good as the ham.

Let them race, saddest podium i have ever seen, there wasn't a happy driver in the top 4 :D. All of them feel bad or screwed. Stop messing with a racing sport like this and give the drivers and viewers what they want, racing!!!!!!!!

Alan prost and senna, bring that shyte back :D.

Vettel basically cheated Webber cos Webber was instructed to slow down and save tyres and engine and gearbox cos the season is not only about 1 race. Lewis, I have lost more respect for Vettel and his showing off but I have a lot more respect for Lewis for admitting it to the world and to Rosberg for listening to the team and respecting the decisions.

Those of you that think Formula 1 is all about racing, think again. Its all about money.

People criticise Michael Scumacher for that incident at the race in Austria where Rubens had to move over at the end but forget the Indy F1 of the same season where they finnished on the line almost together, they misjudged it and Rubens was declared the winner and what did Schumi do ? He laughed about it.

Did you notice how Hamilton was catching vettel? I'd have done the same if I were him.

Thanks guys. Alonso's ego does get the better of him every now and then, but it's also what makes him a great driver.

Did Hamilton honestly pull into the McLaren pit? :D

To be fair it was the team's decision to leave him out. Alonso could feel it was damaged but he could not see it so the team told him they believe it could survive.

Coupled on the tote with Michael Schumacher...same disregard for fellow drivers.

And there are 10 driver's world championships between the two. There is a reason for that. They may be ruthless, but they got to the top because of it.

I wholly disagree with team orders, but if they are there and your teammate is willing to follow them then you should fall in line as well.

No, Hamilton was told to limp home to save fuel, Rosberg was eventually convinced to do the same. The difference with them and Redbull is that Vettel was asking for team orders midway through the race already but when he finally got them, he ignored them cos it didn't suit him. Rosberg and Hamilton changed places twice every lap for quite a few at the end.

You're only going to get closer to prost and senna if you bring back refuelling IMO. It adds a huge dimension to strategies.

The difference between Merc and Red Bull is that Ross Brawn calls the shots at Merc and both drivers complied with his instructions. Vettel has always been a prick, its just starting to show more, he knows he has the support of Marko and the billionaire owner and hence will get away with what he did. Not even a fine from the team?? Shocking

Hes a race car driver, its what he does. Nico should have done the same, its only 2 GPs into the season, stuff team orders!
I think the new rules should only allow team orders in the last 5 GPs, yesterday was embarrassing for the drivers and the teams and the sport.

Formula 1 is a team sport and therefore team orders are right and proper. Rosberg did the right thing in following them, although was a harsh call but Mercs policy of track position after last pit stops is something they've always used... Vettel is a twat for ignoring a direct team order and it's shocking there has been no fall out, am hoping he got sh@t on behind the scenes though.

I am generally in favour of team orders being allowed and out in the open - far better than the farcical last lap "low hydraulic pressure" radio messages the teams had to use in the past - we all knew what was going on anyway. I have a concern, though, that later in the season when there's a clear No 1 championship contender, teams may start to take this to extremes - for example :
On a low downforce circuit like Monza,
Short fuel the No 2 car with only enough fuel for 75% of the race distance so it can get out in front within the first couple of laps.
Short fuel the No 1 car enough to give it a weight & speed advantage in the first few laps and get in behind No 2
Use the No 2 as an aerodynamic 'tow' car, reducing the No 1's fuel consumption and increasing the overall speed, pulling out a huge gap on the rest of the field - No 1 will also have DRS on the straights to further reduce drag & save fuel.
Retire the No 2 car with a "Hydraulic pressure problem" before it runs out of fuel, leaving No 1 to go on and win the race in fuel save mode with the engine turned down ...

Not exactly sportsmanlike, but does anyone think it could be deemed illegal ? It's just team orders being taken to a whole new level ..
