Fiat boss rebukes Montezemolo for Monza statement

Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne has criticised Luca di Montezemolo for the statement he made at the Italian Grand Prix saying he would be the only one to decide when he will leave Ferrari.

Rumours started circulated from the beginning of the Italian Grand Prix weekend that Montezemolo, 67, would be announcing his retirement, but the Ferrari president used his Saturday appearance at Monza to play down the reports as premature. Montezemolo said he intends to see out a minimum of the next three years at Ferrari and added "I will be the first - and I emphasise the first" to announce when he does leave.

But Marchionne, chief executive of Ferrari's parent company Fiat, has responded to this negatively, saying Montezemolo will leave when the company decides it is his time.

"We are good friends but his statements, these are things I wouldn't have said myself," Marchionne said. "On volume and economic results Luca has done an outstanding job. I [also] consider myself essential, of course. But I also know very well that I am at the service of this company. So to create positions, illusions that one can operate outside the rules, is talking rubbish.

"It's the same for him as it is for me; we serve the company. When the company has a change of plan, or if there is no longer a convergence of ideas, things change."

Marchionne added: "Nobody is indispensable."

After the race Fernando Alonso said Ferrari was failing to live up to the tifosi's expectations after leaving Monza with just two points. Marchionne also said he considers Ferrari's current performance unacceptable, with the team's last constructors' championship coming in 2008.

"The heart of Ferrari is winning in F1. I don't want to see our drivers in 7th and 12th place. To see the Reds in this state, having the best drivers, exceptional facilities, engineers who are really good, to see all that and then to consider that we have not won since 2008.

"The important thing for Ferrari is not just the financial results, but also it is winning and we have been struggling for six years."

Oookkay then, indeed the writing is on the wall, Montezemolo is op pad uit unless he can quickly turn things around.

Which i doubt. Such is the extent of the failure.

Draft 2015 calendar reveals 20 races

A draft calendar for the 2015 season doing the rounds at Monza on Sunday shows 20 races.
The first part of the calendar shows little change from 2014, with all events held in the same order and almost the same date.
However, the latter stages of the season witness the return of the Mexican Grand Prix which will form a double-header with the United States Grand Prix in Austin.
The addition of Mexico, which sees the calendar expand to 20 races for only the second time in the history of the Formula One World Championship, means the season will run until the end of November, the Abu Dhabi event scheduled for 29 November.
Things are due to get even busier in 2016 when Azerbaijan joins the calendar, though this could be at the expense of an existing race.
New Jersey (yawn) doesn't get a mention, whilst there is still no sign of a reprieve for India, Korea or Turkey, the latter, though played out to near empty grandstands, highly popular with TV viewers and drivers alike.

Date Race Circuit
15-Mar Australia Melbourne
29-Mar Malaysia Sepang

F1 Drivers who've been booed on podiums by crowds that I can remember:

- Michael Schumacher
- Sebastian Vettel
- Nico Rosberg

They are all German Drivers (OK, Rosberg maybe debatable, but he has the German flag flying behind him on the podium).

Coincidence?

All 3 of them did and will do what it takes to win. 11 Championships between Schumi and Vettel, possibly a 12th added by Rosberg. Haters gonna hate. :p

I'm not hating. I just love F1 and have done for over thirty years. To win "at all costs" is not always sporting. I don't support any particular driver. I just love the sport. I've watched every F1 GP since 1984.

Joe Saward wrote a piece about "crashgate" in Singapore in 2008 which I believe should be compulsory required reading for anyone thinking of getting involved in motorsport - in fact, any sport for that matter.

You can find it here: http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/09/17/two-crashes/

But I'll paste in the last (salient) paragraph:

"Winning is not about finishing first, winning is about passion, about pride, about the joy and the thrill of the contest.

And if you have to manufacture that, then you are lost… and have no place in the sport."

That is very romanticised though. A major aspect of modern sport is gamesmanship. South Africans fall victim to this all too often. We play it too straight. We bemoan Richie McCaw as the greatest cheat in sport but he is not cheating, he is doing what the ref allows him to get away with. He has a knack for finding the grey area and milking it. Michael made a career of pushing the limits and got away with it for the most part and because of it he is the most successful driver the sport has ever seen. Sir Stirling Moss was too much of a good sportsman for his own good. A little bit of selfishness and he'd have been a champion.

Valentino Rossi, at his peak, was a very intimidating rider to go up against as he lived for the close race. He infamously destroyed Sete Gibernau's confidence with borderline passing moves that left Sete complaining to all who would listen and Rossi lifting yet another trophy. Sete will be remembered as the man whom Rossi broke.

Then I prefer to remain a romantic. It's all about the passion for me. Sportsmanship.

Weed out the cheats and leave the real men and women to play sport honourably.

Edit: What you say is correct though, gamesmanship in sport isn't cheating of course, and is all part of the deal these days. Some guys just push it a bit too far though.

Anyone know what the dates/times are for Formula E?
I believe Fox Sport, CCTV5, ITV are broadcasting it amongst others. I know it starts this weekend, just not sure of the times / events taking place (practice, quali, race).

Thanks, found the site, just don't have time to hunt for stuffs!
Wonder if that's local Beijing time... must surely be.

Yes, though its ok we'd be able to catch the feature race as that would not be that early.

I'm more concerned to be able to find a working link, I've tried the various given but not that easy.
