still, at 17 you can be a talented driver but you lack experience at critical times, and become like Grosjean in his first few years that was like a ticking timebomb on track

time will tell
I still don't think it is easy.

Don't agree. This guy must be something special. Many people have tested for F1 and failed...experienced drivers.

You cannot even begin to compare the BMW M12/13 of the 80s against the modern turbos. In qualifying trim Benetton could ramp the boost up and achieve a power-to-weight rate ratio of 2,500 hp/ton vs the modern car's ~1,300 hp/ton. In race trim it was down to 1,850 hp/ton, still significantly more powerful. Factor in the cars of the 80s were stick shifts, so often times one hand on the steering wheel when the monster was laying down fat stripes. No fancy gizmos to keep the engine in check either. Also, the lag. 2 - 3 seconds after putting their foot down the engines would suddenly surge from ~300 hp to 900-1000hp, which meant wheel spinning well through the gears, which again were stick, so one hand on the wheel. The cars were a menace in the wet. The tracks were nowhere near as forgiving either. One mistake and it was game over. Now you can actually gain time by leaving the track, as Vettel frequently does. :p

FIA revises team radio ban

The FIA has revised its restrictions on the use of team radio in order to give teams the freedom to discuss car performance.

In an attempt to put the onus back on the drivers, the FIA planned to ban all team radio relating to driver and car performance. However, after meetings with team managers on Thursday in Singapore the ban was slackened to allow conversations about car performance to take place, although a ban is expected next year.

Driver performance is still restricted, with messages on the following subjects still prohibited from the Singapore Grand Prix onwards.

Driving lines on the circuit
Contact with kerbs
Car set up parameters for specific corners
Comparative or absolute sector time detail of another driver
Speeds in corners compared to another driver
Gear selection compared with another driver
Gear selection in general
Braking points
Rate of braking compared to another driver
Rate of braking or application of brakes in general
Car stability under braking.
Throttle application in general
Throttle application compared to another driver
Use of DRS compared with another driver
Use of any overtake button
Driving technique in general

Methinks there will be more revisions on this as this plays out.

Williams a tad slow, but this seems to be normal for them in FP.

I am certain in the race they will show strong pace.

Vettel to take 10 place penalty this season
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/115950

Sebastian Vettel has been told he will definitely get a Formula 1 engine change penalty this season, following the problem he suffered in Friday practice at the Singapore Grand Prix.

The Red Bull driver stopped at the end of the opening session with a failure caused by an oil pressure loss.

Renault has revealed that the issue came as a surprise, because the engine fitted to his car was not at the end of its life.

The mileage situation means that Vettel will now have to use a sixth power unit at some point before the end of the season because Renault cannot eke out enough mileage to get away with the allowed five units.

Renault's head of trackside operations Remi Taffin said: "We had to stop the engine because we had an oil pressure loss.

"Obviously it affected the ICE [internal combustion engine]. We still need to check, but it is lost.

"Why was it? To be fair we don't know yet. We are stripping it. We did not find anything so far.

"The engine was at something like half-life, so it was quite a surprise and quite a shame, because we still had a small chance to go through the season without introducing a sixth unit.

"With this failure, we will have to commit to a sixth ICE. It is now a question of where we are going to strategically introduce it, instead of how we are going to avoid it."

TIMING PENALTY RIGHT

Taffin said there was no real danger of Vettel needing a seventh unit, but the big decision was deciding when best for the German to fit the sixth engine and suffer a 10-place grid penalty.

"The short answer is before the fifth one breaks - that will be the best opportunity," he said. "Then it is a no-brainer.

Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull being repaired, Singapore GP 2014
"But if you think you have to introduce a sixth one you try to split the remaining races, and see how you will get the sixth one into the plan.

"You also try to get the penalty where it will be the most sensible. I guess when you are in Singapore you don't want to take a 10-place penalty as it is difficult to overtake.

"If we look a bit further, maybe Russia or Austin where there are straights, and you can overtake.

"We saw that with Daniil [Kvyat] in Monza, where he actually took his penalty and could have finished in the points."

Maldonado into the wall.

:whistling:

I wonder if there is going to an award for being the most destructive driver of the season, if there's an F or an S in the day trust him to be the one to stuff up.
