McLaren takes wraps off new MP4-29

McLaren has become the first team to pull the wraps off its 2014 car after an online launch of the new MP4-29 on Friday.

It is the first of the new era of V6 turbo Formula One cars to emerge ahead of pre-season testing next week and features the odd-looking nose that is expected to be a common feature up and down the grid this year. The front end is designed to conform to new safety regulations regarding the height of the front of the nose while also allowing airflow to the floor of the car.

It also features a narrower front wing in line with the 2014 aero regulations and a solo exhaust exiting at the middle of the rear of the car. The cooling requirements for the new V6 turbo engine and energy recovery systems have also required bigger sidepod openings to feed the radiators and intercooler. It is the last McLaren to be powered by Mercedes for the foreseeable future, with Honda set to take over the engine supply from 2015.

Lotus produces first image of new E22

Lotus has released the first image of its new car, the E22, just moments after McLaren unveiled its 2014 challenger on Friday.

The rendered image was released via the team's Twitter feed in what appeared to be an attempt to steal some of the limelight from the McLaren launch. It also comes on the day that Lotus announced team principal Eric Boullier is leaving the team ahead of an anticipated switch to McLaren.

The car features a different approach to the new safety regulations regarding the nose of the car. Instead of the single narrow appendage to lower the tip of the nose, favoured by McLaren and Williams, the Lotus has a two-pronged solution with a gap to allow airflow to the floor of the car.

Nice and neat, though looks a bit too much last year.

Here's another pic of the new McLaren:

Too much of nice.

A tad close to the Mercedes, but I'm assuming they have some kind of agreement beforehand that they don't make their cars too much alike, so am anticipating the Mercs to look different.

I am liking the McLaren for sure, except the penis... All these reveals look amazing except for the first half a metre of the car!

There are a heck of a lot of details for competitors in these images. I guess you can't hide it all.

Off topic - anyone following the new international series from SA? That looks pretty exciting.

• Thrilling new race series combines affordable 373kW, V8 touring cars and promoter profitability
• Global Touring Car Series promises fans a return to real racing values with a worldwide network of championships
The series is the brainchild of managing director, established racer Gary Formato, racing engineer Vic Maharaj and executive director Mark Woolley, with the backing of chairman, entrepreneur and Michael Formato.

Gary Formato is five-time South African motorsport champion, predominantly in sedans, and is a former sports car driver who has competed in Le Mans.

‘SERIOUS AFFORDABLE RACING’

Woolley said: “Racing at the top level is often seen as a compromised mix of technology wars and team orders, and an expensive pastime for well-backed hobbyists on the tiers below.

“What the Global Touring Car (GTC) Series aim to provide is thrilling racing for true motorsport fans, and an opportunity for franchise investors to make money from a proven race series concept. “We want to bring the focus back on serious affordable racing.”

Check the nose on the lotus out. Whats up with the differing lengths at the end? And the pod on the right hand side just in front of the wheel?

Don't know about that nose, but the pod ahead of the right-front wheel is a camera.

The MP4-29 actually looks nice.

One concern; They have no major sponsor on that car.
