Marussia's Chilton fastest at Barcelona test

Marussia's Max Chilton set a surprise fastest time on the first day of the in-season test at the Circuit de Catalunya.

After a wet morning, conditions improved throughout the afternoon before Chilton bolted on a set of super-soft tyres in the final five minutes to clock the best time of the day. The tyre choice means Chilton's position in the standings is not really representative of the back marker team's pace, but the Marussia managed to go 0.2s quicker than second fastest Charles Pic, whose Lotus was fitted with soft tyres. Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton was third fastest, just a fraction slower than Pic, but using medium tyres.

The wet morning limited running early on but allowed Pirelli to test its 2015 intermediate tyres with Sauber, which was doing tyre-specific testing on Tuesday along with Toro Rosso. The drizzle had stopped by midday and the sun started to break through in the afternoon to dry and warm the track.

Wow, hows that, maybe not true competitive reflection, but made me smile nonetheless.

McLaren could ‘go radical’ after Silverstone

McLaren could turn to more radical development concepts if they have not made significant progress by July’s race at Silverstone, according to the team’s racing director Eric Boullier.

The Woking-based squad introduced a number of upgrades to the Mercedes-powered MP4-29 at last weekend’s Grand Prix in Spain, but neither Jenson Button nor Kevin Magnussen were able to break into the top ten in the race.

With the next two rounds of the championship taking place at the atypical Monaco and Canada venues, Boullier believes that the races in Austria and Britain will provide a better barometer of progress - and could also dictate the team’s future development path.

Sounds nice, but methinks more half empty PR aimed words by my own team

See the new exhaust Merc are testing, for improved engine sound.

Hope it'll do the trick.

And apparently has not been very successful in creating the roar they were hoping for.

TBC I am sure.

People forget that he drove a BAR to 3rd place in in the driver's WC in 2004. Only beaten by the Ferraris of Schumi and Rubens that year. Nothing wrong with Button. The cars he's driven on the other hand...

I never said there was anything wrong with Button. Simply feel that he's Rubens Barrichello with a drivers title. I think he puts a car where it belongs but lacks the Vettel/Hamilton/Schumi factor whereby he will move on to the next level. With the possible exception of the first 7 races in 2009, of course.

He has passed his sell by.

Should either retire, or see out 1 year with a backmarker team to develop car and pass on knowledge and then retire, do some DTM, and then live happily ever after.

Rosberg: Mercedes noise solution didn't work

According to Nico Rosberg, Mercedes much trumpeted solution to the noise problem with F1 2014 didn't work.

As the debate over the sound of the new era of F1 continues, Mercedes tried a device fitted to its exhaust aimed at improving the situation. However, according to Nico Rosberg it didn't work.

In recent weeks fans have taken to social media with their 'artistic impressions' of how Mercedes might deal with the problem, the general consensus being that the German team would opt for a Vuvuzela type trumpet.

In the end the solution was nothing as radical, but even then it didn't work.

"We tried the new exhaust today," said Rosberg at the conclusion of the two-day test in Barcelona. "As a team we want to do good for the sport.
