Final layer of asphalt laid at Sochi

With 70 days to go to the inaugural Grand Prix in Russia, the Sochi Autodrom has applied the final layer of the racing surface to the new circuit.

Crews of 50 workers operating 15 specialized machines have been working around the clock, laying the asphalt with help from German track architects Tilke GmbH and other subcontractors to reach this milestone for the new circuit.

The final composition of the three layers used to complete the racing surface, from top to bottom, is as follows:

4 cm asphalt wearing course, modified for racing circuits

5 cm binder course and asphalt base course

The final makeup of the asphalt contains special polymer material that ensures the surface texture of the track remains 'grippy' and provides optimum traction for the tyres, which is vital as the drivers will reach speeds of almost 200 mph.

Once work began on laying the actual track surface, the pavers worked on it all day without stopping as any break in the layering process may cause unevenness on the surface. The evenness was checked continuously and other quality checks were also made throughout the process. The final layer is 5cm deep and this layer alone will cover more than 5,000 cubic meters of the asphalt.

The makeup of the asphalt was developed specifically for the Sochi Autodrom. Hart Consult International created a unique recipe of the asphalt, working together with their Russian colleagues by taking into account various factors such as the local climate and the availability of suitable aggregates and bitumen. The average lifetime of the racing surface is almost 4 years.

F1 is boring because it has been engineered that way. Cars don't/can't pass because they have to go as fast as they can while going as slow as possible (conserve fuel and tires). I mean seriously, go out there and race, but don't go too fast. The engine sound is honestly the least of their worries. The problem is hearing a radio broadcast telling the driver to slow down. Reintroduce refueling. Extend the life of the tires. We all know for a fact that none of those cars are running at maximum for a whole race. Unleash the hounds!

Yes, def the refuelling part. Honestly, I’ve never seen anyone seriously hurt doe to a petrol incident, a bit hot maybe but not badly hurt. Improve on the safety of this but bring back this key attraction. That and the car sound.

If cars can't pass how did Hamilton go from pit lane to 3rd in the last race? And that's just one example...

Very interesting.. I do like his idea of induction charging in the track itself, that is a very intriguing idea.

Ecclestone bribery trial ends with $100m deal

Bernie Ecclestone's bribery trial in Munich is over after German prosecutors agreed to end the case in exchange for a $100 million (£59 million) payment.

Under German law, some criminal cases can be settled with fines or smaller punishments if all parties, including the judge, agree. On Tuesday morning the prosecutors indicated they would accept the $100 million settlement and the court confirmed the news in the afternoon.

Ecclestone's lawyer Sven Thomas said on Tuesday: "It is a settlement without any conviction, the presumption of innocence is still valid. That was a condition under which I negotiated."

Ecclestone had been on trial since April charged with bribery and incitement to breach of trust. At the centre of the trial was a $44 million payment made by Ecclestone to German banker Gerhard Gribkowsky, which prosecutors claimed was made to ensure Formula One was sold to Ecclestone's preferred buyer in 2006.

Ecclestone denied the charges, arguing that he paid Gribkowsky after the banker threatened to make false claims about his tax affairs in the UK. If Ecclestone had been found guilty he could have faced up to ten years in prison.

Last week Ecclestone's lawyers called for the case to be dropped, citing a lack of evidence and labelling the proceedings "extremely burdensome" on the F1 boss. They said the allegations against the F1 boss were "highly questionable".

Hahaha, money talks and bullschit walks !!!

It is quite funny, he basically pays another bribe (but because it goes to the government it's considered OK) to have the case of bribery go away...

The rich will get richer and the poor poorer and sadly that ladies and gentlemen is how the world rolls.

Yep, Ricciardo has the measure of the torque beast while Vettel prefers a car that sticks to the road and responds more predictably.

Ha, or maybe Ricciardo has just become the better driver.

Likely to Sebs displeasure, but he's not dealing with it too well.

Well IMO it makes him the better driver. I've said it before on here, Seb does well from the front row of the grid with a car that suits his specific driving style. Just check how many of his wins came from the front row - it's a very high number.

True that, Lewis does not seem to have a problem with that, and Alonso too I have seen kick up a storm from the back.

Hehe, fingerboy will be back... you will see, winning a championship once might be luck, four times in a row... nooo ways! Not to sure how you would want him to deal with it differently...

Bla bla blaaa... :p
