F1: Max Verstappen told to change approach as Red Bull’s patience wears thin
RED Bull’s Max Verstappen has been urged to change his approach to F1 after enduring another disappointing race weekend due to a costly mistake.
Verstappen started the Monaco GP at the back of the grid after carelessly crashing into the barriers in Practice Three, only salvaging two points from the race as teammate Daniel Ricciardo took victory in an impressive RB14.
Though Red Bull continue to back their highly-rated driver, Verstappen has now either had a collision or spun in all six grands prix this year and Christian Horner hopes the Dutchman’s latest setback will prompt him to alter his style.
“He has a very good teacher in the car next door to him,” the Red Bull team principal told reporters in Monte Carlo.
Monaco GP victor Daniel Ricciardo will be hit with multiple grid penalties at the upcoming Canadian GP.
Two weeks after claiming victory in F1's showpiece event despite a crippling loss of power from his Renault engine, the Red Bull driver - third in the world championship behind Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel - is set to suffer a series of engine-related grid demotions in Montreal.
"Unfortunately, we will be taking penalties," Red Bull chief technical officer Adrian Newey confirmed to Sky Sports News.
With just a third of the season elapsed, Ricciardo has already used a significant chunk of his allowance for engine parts for the entire campaign with the size of his penalties in Canada this weekend set to be determined by just how many components will require changing after he guided his handicapped RB14 car to the chequered flag in Monaco.
"We could be suffering some quite big penalties," said Newey.]
Disappointing but not a train smash. You can overtake in Canada and the probability of a safety car remains high. It's all setup for a Ricciardo special.
Modern era hybrids won't be so good for overtaking in Montreal unless it's a Ferrari or Merc IMO.
How places will he lose?
Yeah but this is Danny Ric we're talking about here. Last of the late breakers. If anyone can make it happen (and do it safely), he will. Don't bet against him standing on the podium.
As much as I am willing him to do welll, I'm not putting him on the podium in my head unfortunately - barring some major attrition at the front.
Agreed, even without penalties Canada isn't a Red Bull track, those long straights...
Crazier to stay with RenaultRedbull will have to decide shortly on Honda or Renault power next year....
I think it would be crazy to move to Honda atm
