Monaco is the worst race on the line up. What a snorefest. Cars can literally be 6seconds quicker a lap but still won't be able to make a pass. its shocking, something really needs to be done at the circuit.

At least Verstappen provided some entertainment.

It was more exciting than Australia IMO. I tolerate it because what it lacks in overtaking action, it makes up for in displays of incredible skill and concentration from the drivers. Watching them thread the cars through the swimming pool chicane at over 150mph is brilliant.

I was wondering about the possibility of removing the Nouvelle chicane at the end of the tunnel and sharpening the next corner at Tabac. This means if you got a good run out of the tunnel, you had a shot at an overtake into the left hander at Tabac. Of course, approaching that corner at what would be over 200mph would be a safety concern if something failed...

If we can't have F1 at kyalami because of runoff etc, how the hell do they race at Monaco.

This was discussed in another thread. My take on it is that the average speeds at Monaco are so much lower and consequently, the need for runoffs aren't as serious. The places where the cars do hit speeds (into Saint Devote or out of the tunnel) are festooned with Techpro crash barriers that absorb impact (Max tripping over Grosjean in 2016 as an example). Kyalami has a lot of fast sweeping corners (which Monaco doesn't) which facilitate the need for extensive runoff areas.

Yeah.
I do think it's telling, though, that a guy with engine failure, who was going up the main straight in 6th gear, 40km/h slower than the guy behind him in 7th gear, was able to maintain his lead. Circuit lacks overtaking opportunities, the cars of today have completely outgrown it.

If I'm not mistaken, Monaco doesn't meet F1 regulations - because its "monaco" and a historical track it won't change.

all you need to do is watching qualifying at monaco to know who will win.

Yeah true that. Ag at the end of the day (to quote Naas) I don't see Monaco going anywhere. If it had joined the calendar two years ago, it would've been dropped in a heartbeat but it has history and prestige and the jetset love to be seen there. And despite what they said after this past weekend, the drivers all claim to love it too. Although, they only seem to say that when they're out in front but anyway...

It should get an extension soon if all goes according to plan.

Monaco is anachronistic in the modern age of safety, but it is a legacy circuit and so exceptions are made. It is the crown jewel of the F1 calendar and it also makes up one third of the Triple Crown of motorsport, along with the Indy 500 and Le Mans. It's going nowhere.

As for improving it; there is currently no space to do anything with it. There are plans underway to claim more of the sea and increase the land area near the tunnel but not nearly enough space to create another straight with a legitimate overtaking opportunity.

I know all this.
It seems a bit hypocritical though.

Agree.. If some of the criteria is that there has to be sufficient run off space to host a race, then Monaco should not be on the list anymore. Irrespective of history, legacy or whatever, it's a crappy race unless there is safety car or something happens.
