Gravel traps may cause cars to flip over, but the biggest reason for removing them was because they caused the end of your race for just the smallest mistake, like running a bit wide and getting stuck in the gravel.
Now you may argue that these are the top drivers and should not make mistakes. But then they will not push to the limits.
Plus fans want to see overtaking, but just think how many time we see one or more car get pushed out the track when they pass each other and force the other to go wide. How many drivers will then be out when the get stuck in gravel? Think of the hectic starts in F1 when so many cars go off track.
Then you put into the equation all today's safety measures and think how much time we will loose with safety cars to remove all these cars from the gravel traps.
Making gravel traps less was a great idea, unfortunately some circuits went to extreme with it and then drivers went to far and started carving their own circuit outside track limits.
