Who is awarded pole position?​

Last year, the driver who won the Sprint was awarded the honour of pole position.

However, this year, the driver who sets the fastest time in qualifying – which on Sprint weekends takes place on Friday – will be given the accolade.

The driver who takes pole position on Friday will start the Sprint in first position. The driver who wins the Sprint will start P1 in Sunday’s Grand Prix.

So which is it?

Which is really silly. You're no longer qualifying for a Grand Prix, you're qualifying for a quickie.

Isnt that what it was like last year? Then that whole quote saying its different makes no sense

Difference is official pole position award (that tyre thing) went to winner of sprint race last year

Weird thing now is guy starting race in P1 isn't necessarily in pole position

Think of it this way: there are two races in the weekend, pole position is for the driver who starts the first race in P1.
