Nelson Piquet aimed further racial and homophobic slurs at Lewis Hamilton

The three-time world champion made further unsavoury comments in a 2021 podcast, beyond those brought to public attention on Monday

The condemnation facing Nelson Piquet has escalated as evidence of further racist and also homophobic slurs he has made against Lewis Hamilton has emerged. The Briton had already demanded the sport take action to combat racism and called for a change to the “archaic mindset” in the sport.

On Monday an interview from a podcast in 2021 was released of Piquet using a racial slur to describe Hamilton. The three-time champion in the 1980s was roundly vilified by the sport, with F1 and the FIA issuing statements condemning racism. The Brazilian, whose daughter is the partner of Max Verstappen, has since been banned from the F1 paddock for life.

Piquet had issued a statement saying his words had been “ill thought-out” but denying they were racist, claiming they had been mistranslated. His arguments were given little credence and now look all but hollow as further footage has emerged.

The Brazilian website Grande Prêmio said it had obtained a full copy of November’s podcast and in it Piquet repeated the racist epithet and added a homophobic slur, when discussing his former rival Keke Rosberg, his son Nico and Hamilton, who drove with the younger Rosberg. F1 had no intention of revoking its ban on Piquet despite his statement and these further details will surely ensure he never returns to the F1 paddock.

He's not wrong. I hate this "cancel culture" we live in and get that old people live with an old mindset, but ffs you should know not to air them publicly.

Anyway - between bored old men, the media and Netflix we now spend more time on bullshit like this than racing.
 
Not to take anything away from what NP has said and the S-storm he has created..... But, I wonder why all of this footage has gone viral now? How did it not gain traction last year when it was recorded and released?

Doesn't serve the agenda...

Anyway, back to the track. It seems as if Merc has made some decent progress regarding the porpoising. Also great to see Norris up the at the top. Let's see if the normal order resumes though or if the shakeup holds.

F1 has a lot of input into the the motor industry.

Although even carbon neutral is a finite resource, which is why the focus should be on renewables...

Hamilton removes nose stud

Ahead of a potential showdown with the authorities, Lewis Hamilton has removed his nose stud for the British Grand Prix weekend.

Earlier in the season, with new race directors on board, the FIA clarified the long standing rules relating to jewellery, a move that immediately drew the seven-time champion's ire.

At Monaco, the original deadline, the ban was delayed for a further two races, Hamilton having previously stated that if the rule was enforced he was ready to accept a ban.

Speaking on Thursday as the Silverstone weekend got underway, when asked about the jewellery ban, Hamilton replied: "With all due respect, it's kind of crazy to think that, with everything that's going on in the world, that is a focus for people. I would say it's worrying that we've got so much bigger fish to fry.


"We've really got to start focusing on other more important areas," he added. "I will be racing this weekend, I will be working with the FIA.

"I would say the matter is not particularly massively important."

However, TV coverage on the opening day of the race weekend revealed that the Briton had removed the controversial nose stud at the centre of the row.
 
Piquet's comments should surprise no one. He has always had a reputation for being a nasty piece of work, prone to passing bigoted comments.

Briatore, of all people, called out Piquet's behaviour way back in 2009 amidst the 'Crashgate' scandal. Of course that may have been the rare occasion Piquet's personal slander of someone was somewhat accurate.

Briatore believes that the race-fix claims levelled at him and his team, which he has denied and is taking legal action against the Piquets over, follows a pattern of besmirching that Piquet Sr carried throughout his F1 career.

One of his most famous outbursts came in a magazine interview when he was still driving, when the three-time champion accused Ayrton Senna of being gay and said that Nigel Mansell's wife was 'ugly'. Those remarks caused outrage at the time.

"We know Nelson's story, he's always run down everyone," explained Briatore at Monza. "Nelson drove for me and... Nelson is blackmailing, and that's what we have brought.

"It's very tough for Renault to have had these put downs from Nelsinho and from Piquet Sr, but then we know Piquet Sr. He has always denigrated everyone - starting from [Ayrton] Senna, to Mansell's wife, to everyone. That's what Piquet Sr has always done. I know him well because he raced for us, I know Sr better than Jr."

It's all part of the marketing machine, just like the news. I wouldn't be surprised to see Ferrari back in charge in Italy
