Why is Norris rated so highly? Didn't that tortoise Sainz outperform him when they were in the same team?

Sainz has had better performance with the exception of 2021 when they were basically on-par. Norris comes with an entire audience from the gaming side which drives his popularity.

Edit: Most of social media and the younger generation rate him higher than most of Mclaren's drivers despite not ever winning a GP.

He's been best-of-the-rest for the past two seasons (2021 and 2022), ie the best non-Red Bull/Ferrari/Mercedes driver on the grid. Last year he even finished ahead of Leclerc in the standings. And he's only 22.

Agreed, Norris is a bit of a wasted talent at the moment but I think Mclaren has a long term plan with him to get back to the front. Just hope it works out.

Only seat I really see him filling is Mercedes if Hamilton retires.

I don't agree with that article painting McLaren as the culprits. End of the day he hasn't been performing close to the level of his team mate and he's been given plenty of grace. A nice smile and a few jokes doesn't bring home the points...

I also thought the same, until a frustrated Norris let slip (in Austria, I think) that the car was a bit of a dog under braking.

Ok, so Lando can drive around the problems better than Ric, but the latter is not wholly to blame for the lack of performance.

I think the difference is what the drivers are doing with the vehicle.

If you take Merc as an example, the car has been a dog this year. We've seen both George and Lewis having good and bad weekends in the car. George currently has more points, Lewis has finished higher on the podium. It's tit for tat.

The McLarens aren't in that position. Norris has smashed Ric all over the place, he's not been competitive at all. The car may be a mess, but they're in the same mess.

Yea, it definitely can. But a good driver changes their driving style to suit the car.
Nope, a good driver let the team change the car to suit his style. Schumacher, Verstappen, Hamilton etc. Their teammates have no say and must struggle with what they get.

I keep missing your posts because I have you ignored. Unfortunately I saw this one. But it was a good reminder of why you're ignored, so a pretty good start to the day overall.

Carry on.

That cut deep, I am forever scared, you won your internet battle by informing me you put me on ignore

Same could be said of half the paddock and the various personalities. Very rarely does a rookie in a mid-field team deliver better than an experienced driver despite their success in other formulas. I'd much prefer Mclaren poaching an existing F1 driver with equal promise and at least some experience to balance Norris. But it'll be great to see how it all plays out regardless of what Mclaren decide but it would be disaster for Mclaren if whoever they go with doesn't at least perform better than Ricciardo if he's terminated early.
There's a difference between Ricciardo and the rest of the paddock. Most of them don't take home the money that he does. He's one of the highest paid drivers on the grid and is not performing like it...

"Before analysing how Alpine found itself in this state, allow me to stress that the information learned by RacingNews365.com concerning Piastri's move to McLaren was derived not from a single source, but three different parties - on two continents, in three countries – all with knowledge of the information. Crucially, all provided essentially the same details.

However, we have omitted items such as timelines for fear that these could jeopardise certain insiders in England and Australia. All I will say in this regard is: there is considerable dissent in the team's ranks, with some choice language peppering the details. Saliently, all pointed to a two- plus one-year deal."

Sure he's the 6th biggest earner and out of the current grid is ranked 6th in terms of GP wins and 6th in terms of podiums - it's kinda relative if you consider the track record.
