Ricciardo is the reason why McLaren is even behind Alpine in the first place. A position they should not be in if he was within 20 points of his teammate by your own example...

Agreed. It is the first year of a new Formula the teams, drivers and Engineers are all still learning.
look at Hamilton's first half season.
Would you say that he has forgotten how to drive and that Russell is now the superior driver?
The drivers with most experience in the Old Formula are the ones that are finding it hardest to adapt to the new.
The younger drivers are still learning and have fewer preconceived ideas of how the cars should handle.
