In all of those it was the individual team or driver who paid the price for their antics, not the entire field. So, based on that precedent if the FIA were to step in today and change the result because Alonso’s team cheated, all that would happen is he’d be excluded from the race.

That would hand the win to Nico Rosberg with Hamilton moving up from third to second, Massa would be all of 12th with his deficit to Hamilton in the standings growing. Instead of Hamilton winning the title by a single point, the Briton would win by three.

That was a really harsh penalty for basically equates to a "first lap" incident. Everyone was gunning for positions and Carlos made a mistake. A penalty that takes him to the back of the field seems bloody unfair.

I watched Jolyon Palmer's Aus analysis last night. He correctly referred back to Texas last year when Russell received a 5s penalty for doing the same thing to Sainz at turn 1, lap 1, which Saiz did to Alonso in Aus. When you look at it like that, the penalty was consistent.

Unfortunately for Carlos, he got reamed by the red flag, but that doesn't mean the penalty should be less because he is going to suffer more.

SO initially I thought the 5s for Saiz was too harsh. But now that I have watched Palmer's break down, I can see why, when Sainz was begging on the phone to rather speak to the stewards first, the team radio came back to basically say the penalty is right, just move on.
 
Anyone think that F1 would be better served if safety car laps and red flagged/restart procedure laps didn't count towards the race lap total?

That won't make a difference though, because most teams would then have under fuelled, as they fuel to have exactly enough left over after the race for the sample test.

I'm aware of the fuel argument - surely they could fuel accordingly though - they already run fuel-saving laps as it is. Would make it interesting.

April 7 (Reuters) - Formula One's first sprint weekend of the season in Azerbaijan at the end of April
will have a second qualifying session instead of final practice, with Saturday's 100km race a standalone event,
Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur said.

[Yesterday evening:] Teams had agreed the change , which has yet to be confirmed by the governing FIA, Vasseur told reporters.

Now there will be just one practice followed by a Friday qualifying for Sunday's race and then another qualifying on Saturday
for the sprint, which still awards points but no longer has a direct link to the grand prix.

"For once I think all the teams were aligned.
It's not very often that it's the case so we have to jump on it," said Vasseur.

The other sprint races this season will be in Austria, Belgium, Qatar, Austin and Brazil.

Formula One Chief Executive Stefano Domenicali has backed the idea of
reducing practice and giving fans more entertainment.

I quite like it in principal.
Only one Practice session to setup optimally for 2 races is a challenge but the teams are up to it.
I also like the fact that the sprint and the Race are separate points, so one team may win the sprint series and a different team win the F1 series.
Let's see how it pans out or fades out as the season progresses.
