It's in the article and the quote in my post.
I've just read the article again three times to check, but genuinely can't see anything to this effect. I might very well be going blind. Would you mind quoting the part that says this?

Yes I am also confused where they get that. According to my reading it only says it's a standalone event for the weekend that will have its own qualifying and results will not have any influence on where you start for the main race.
Surely if there was a separate F1 and Sprint league it would have hit the main headline.

Sprint points will still count as normal in the championship

Maybe he used the wrong wording? Its like Jean says, 2 separate races, both give points, but not different leagues. F1 quali on friday and race on sunday, with saturday its own mini event with separate quali and quick race on a single day. Both still count for points, although separately, to the same league.

That's how I have it too. I got confused when he spoke about separate points, with different teams potentially winning the sprint and the main series.

Probably my misinterpretation.

I read "another qualifying on Saturday for the sprint, which still awards points but no longer has a direct link to the grand prix." To mean that the sprint points do not count as F1GP points so must be separate Sprint series points.

On rereading It could also simply mean that the outcome of the race has no baring, ie. start grid of the main race.
It was the points reference that confused me.

F1 is really just over complicating things. Just do practice 1 on Saturday morning with qualifying in the afternoon and practice 2 on Sunday morning with race in the afternoon. If they want a sprint race then replace qualifying with it and use reverse order of the top 10 from previous race and then the rest of the order. Super soft tires only for the sprint with at least one pit.

While separating the Grand Prix and sprint is good, lack of extra practice sessions is an issue for F2 and reserve drivers.

If more Grand Prix weekends move to the sprint format, that's fewer chances for young drivers to run in practice.
