So damage control for McLaren.

Piastri will be fired up to take the win. Lando can still take a good points position, even finish ahead of Max with a little luck.

Really great seeing so many teams with a genuine shout of winning though

Lando is gonna have to rely on luck and strategy. It’s a street circuit so elbows out everywhere.

Anyone know what happened with Lando? Was it a bad radio call or did he misread a white flag? Why was there a yellow to start with?

Yellow due to a slow moving Gasly.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella was far firmer than that, insisting F1's governing body didn't follow the sport's rules with their yellow-flag operation.

"We were discussing with the FIA as to why a yellow flag was displayed at that moment in time, which was extremely costly," Stella told Sky Sports F1's Ted Kravitz in Baku.

"We were in conversations with the FIA as to why that happened because the yellow flag isn't necessary when a car is just a slow car, it is not on a flying lap.

"Everyone tried their best I'm sure, this time there was a situation that ideally, and I think by the regulations, shouldn't have happened. We paid the price."

The Race understands that there have only been initial discussions between McLaren and the FIA - and that a deeper conversation will likely follow.

However, while a yellow flag was not used to cover Ocon’s crawling car for his inlap after his initial moment in Turn 5/6 until later in the lap, it’s likely that the FIA will cite the combination of very slow car with the blind left-right combination of the flat-out Turn 17-18 as the reasoning for finally deploying yellows at that point. The marshals also have discretion on which flag is used based on their judgement.

It's also understood that the need to be sharp with yellow flags in this area was discussed in the drivers' briefing. That could explain the eagerness to throw a yellow, and why it was withdrawn once Ocon was back onto the straight after Turn 19.

Carlos in the house!

Lulu was here earlier, but got mobbed and security had a hard time keeping them off him.

Prediction time

Win will be between Oscar and LeClerc. Seeing how aggressive Oscar is against his own team mate, I think he'll be leading at the end of lap one and win the race. LeClerc to finish 2nd. I'm actually going with Perez to complete the podium.

Norris with have a good race considering where he's starting and unless a well timed safety car helps him, best he can finish will be 5th/6th.

Sainz to finish 4th. Russell 5th, Max 6th, Norris 7th, Lewis 8th, Colapinto 9th and Albon 10th

A third for Perez.
Hamilton second
Le Clerc third.

Could be good entertainment watching Lewis and Lando attempt to come through the field.

Lewis Hamilton is set to start the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from the pit lane after taking a full new power unit beyond his allocation for the season.

While that would not have been enough to prompt a pit-lane start, the FIA confirmed Mercedes made suspension changes to his car outside parc fermé conditions, which is set to see the seven-time World Champion begin the race from the pit lane.

Hamilton had qualified seventh for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday, but Mercedes opted to fit a brand new internal combustion engine, turbocharger, MGU-H and MGU-K to his car, beyond his allocated pool for the season.

The FIA also confirmed that: “Changes have been made to the set-up of the suspension of car number 44 without the approval of the FIA technical delegate, this not being in accordance with Article 40.9 of the 2024 Formula One Sporting Regulations.”

As a result, the matter has been referred to the stewards, where a pit-lane start for Hamilton is likely.
