They did. Despite their best efforts. They took so many unnecessary risks, but it worked out.

If… could’ve also botched the swap and hulk might never have had an issue. McLaren were happy managing the gap and once again, worst scenario was 1pt.
 
Just rewatched the swap. Max was ~1.2 seconds behind 2nd when Lando moved off line to overtake. Two corners after the overtake was complete Max was ~0.29s behind 2nd. That would've been very bad earlier in the race.

I also tracked the Yellow Flag, Oscar Radio Messages and VSC as follows:

31:54 Yellow Flag
32:31 -> OSCAR - If possible swap positions
32:35 -> OSCAR - Don't swap positions Hulkenberg underway
32:52 -> OSCAR - Swap positions
33:50 VSC

I'm all for humour (even sarcasm) but at least get the basics right. Humour is much better if one doesn't have to resort to peddling falsities.
