no it compromised the start of his hot lap

no it didn't

his engineer wanted him ahead of Max... so George floored it and completely misjudged it by catching Max in the middle of a corner. All cars were NOT on a hot lap. George then gets past Max and then slows down to almost a halt to give him more space to Alonso, then floors it again a few seconds later to start his lap.

He's a moron and should have got a penalty just for being a moron.

In fairness if Max wasnt slower than the delta and on the racing line driving slowly he wouldn’t have been there…

Also, having to slam on brakes and go off line with sand everywhere is sub optimal when doing a prep lap.

Regardless, max is guilty however the penalty imposed is what’s controversial.

but George was on a slow lap... on the racing line

hmmmm
No he was on a prep lap at the minimum speed for such as specified by the RD but sure, if someone else came up behind Russell would be in as much trouble. Max's are two fold - 1. Under the delta specified 2. On the racing line with a faster car approaching.

Then explain from 35 seconds onwards... George slows down to a crawl space. If Max suddenly then came up behind him, then what?

George = idiot

He could have just zoomed past him and said nothing or "oops I misjudged that one" but nope HE WANTS to get other drivers penalised to benefit himself. Or he could have just stayed where he was driving the normal slow speed before your fast lap and none of this would have happened, either way.

was George being an Idiot? absolutely.

was Max innocent? no.

Was Max at Fault? no.

was the penalty more harsh than it should have been? absolutely.

we do not live in a black and white world people. George could have been an Idiot and Max could have gotten a reprimand and a Fine without a grid penalty. that is in my opinion what should have happened, but it seems like the new RD is out to prove a point that there are no favorites.

if things keep going the way they are, Max is going to end up with a Race Ban by halfway though the season next year, Stroll will be banned from the sport and there will be more reserve drivers getting a Drive as many Drivers will get penalty points and miss races (not just Max)

I want to be clear, I think the penalty was unfair, and I think the RD made many mistakes. but there is something to be said about putting some fear into the Drivers and teams for breaking rules. there has been a bit too much taking advantage of the RD and the penalty system over the past 2 years. the implementation at the moment leaves a lot to be desired, but I can support a more strict RD to create a more equal and fair culture of racing. no more dive bomb overtake attempts from Max and Ocon. but more late sends by Sainz and Fair but hard racing from LeClerc

RD doesn't hand out penalties. This seems a very, very difficult concept to grasp

Omfg. There's a minimum lap time. Max didn't comply = driving slowly. The fact that he was on the racing line simultaneously just makes it more idiotic. George met the minimum lap time regardless.

Perhaps but he complied with the required lap time.

No

Yes

Was the penalty excessive - Yes.

you are correct, and I am wrong on that my bad.

it is still strange that the new RD brought with him whole bunch of controversial penalties. I made the connection between the two but penalties are decided by the stewards not the RD, so what lead to the strange penalties?

and I am not just talking about the 1 place grid drop for max.
the 10 second stop go for Norris, the Drive though for HAM, and a bunch of other ones that were out of the norm for the rest of the year.

Can the race director set the tone for the penalties? Ie, brief the stewards to crack down in stuff?

I'm in full agreement with you - the penalties were completely overboard and inconsistent with the season so far. It's not impossible that some directive was given to the stewards regarding taking a harder line, but unless someone spills the beans we'll never know.

Not in theory, no. Stewards don't report to the RD, but there superior could have given them certain instructions.

LOL the best thing about all this, is the clowns that is trying to come up with BS penalties against Max, are getting fired left right and center.
We just wait for the end of Johnny Herbert.
