Man it looks like a different world. Okes rocking up to race in their church pants, hopping out to wipe yourself during a pitstop, makeshift roads. No safety stuff, you can see him sliding the car around while chasing them down, could have died at any point. Hectic...

I was touching on driver skills and ability over the decades, not money.

But to address the monetary aspect; motor racing has always been a rich man's sport.
The Oldest saying in F1 is "The only way for a team owner to become a Millionaire in F1 is to start as a MultiMillionaire". :)

You simply cannot compare previous eras.

"... Cape Town's bid is hoping the central, urban location of its Tilke-designed 5.7km circuit, snaking around the Green Point harbour and utilising the facilities around the DHL Stadium built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, will help it get across the line. "The latest design has all the bells and whistles," Cape Town GP CEO Igshaan Amlay told Autosport. "It's partly on the waterfront and it also uses the facilities that have been used for the football World Cup.

"We meet all the requirements, with the airport 15 to 20 minutes away from the circuit; we've got a top hospital on site and plenty of hotels within walking distance. What also plays a big role is the natural backdrops of Robben Island, the waterfront and Table Mountain. Cape Town has a lot to offer as our top holiday destination. ...

... Contrary to previous proposals, the latest design would not take the circuit through the DHL Stadium itself but run alongside it, using the venue for the paddock, media centre and hospitality areas.

"The purpose of running through the stadium was that it can take a capacity of up to 70,000 people and our intention was to make it accessible to people that can never afford to go to a Formula 1 race," Amlay explained. "After speaking to the circuit's designers, there are a few obstacles and it would be better to actually run along the circuit.

"DHL Stadium will be used for the paddocks and the media centre. Everything that was set up for the football World Cup will be reactivated, and it's already existent within the stadium, so we will make full use of it. We will still run through the original Green Point athletics stadium, which has a rich legacy."..."

Too many street circuits imho but perhaps Cape Town could replace one. Kyalami would be my first choice but Cape Town would be a win for their tourism. Either way we need a race and would support either.

So no overtaking spots...

would love a cpt f1 gp but yeah too many street circuits and only the rich green point sea point people who can afford to see an f1 race will benefit

I have been thinking about Kyalami as a track for the current spec of cars for a bit.

and even if it gets to standard and wins the bid it will be a terrible race.

the cars have become so wide, that Kyalami now seems like a very Narrow Circuit.

add in the heavy breaking zones and tight corners, and the distance above sea level (1500m) for reference Mexico city is 2240m above sea level.

Kyalami would be a track with Monaco level downforce and almost no overtaking.

now lets talk about WHEN in the year the race could take place. May, June July is too cold. not by much, but its not the ideal space for F1 cars, and you would not want to plan it for then.

March, April, September, October, November,December means rainy season.

now we think Sustainability, and the way F1 is structuring the races to minimise the flights between races. so it would be something like austrailia, China, Japan, singapore, south Africa, Bahrain that kind of makes sense? well that puts the race in April/May and its the ideal time temp wise but now rain is a big risk, and the very real possibility of the entire weekend being a wash out happens especially during a wet period like we are having this year.

I am starting to think Kyalami is not a good option.
